This is a myth, unless you roll around with sand in your pockets all the time. I've owned the Z Fold 3 and 4 and I've never had any scratches on the main display, and I even remove the screen protector from the inner/main display.
Yea maybe when we go to the beach. Maybe I'll look for some zippered pouch for it.

It's a phone that starts smaller and thicker and unfolds into a regular slab phone. This has been done before and nowadays it is more annoying than anything having to unfold a cell phone to basically do anything with it. Again, I realize that some people love the Flip so I'm not hating on it, but I have experienced it for myself and I don't understand the appeal.
I think the main appeal is portability. I have some clothes and jackets where my 14 Pro sticks out of the pocket and is less secure and more prone to theft. I would personally love a little square phone that folds open like a flip phone.

I also miss my 12 mini. Uh oh, is this Apple’s way to make the iPhone mini fans pay twice as much for portability?

I am following this tech evolvement of foldable devices with great curiosity, but I'm pretty sure I won’t buy any of the first Apple products that will use this technique.

A lot of people in this thread are forgetting that's how a lot of technological breakthroughs happen. Yes, the explorations may not have a promise presented like this or even solve some kind of issue. But in any kind of product development (especially hardware) explorations, tests and future developments change that and are crucial for finding what's next in the market. With Apple especially do not underestimate their ability to tie everything in beautifully with clever user interfaces. Something hardware-related may look weird on paper but then the user experience completely transforms it. We last saw that with the weird double hole punch on the 14 Pro before everyone found out the software behind Dynamic Island. What you're seeing right now is absolutely not going to be what ships.

I think it would be interesting to do a statics study on the number of device returns, warranty repair\ issues.

Apple has been really good to remove the human factor of "breaking something" "wearable parts". Having a device like this would be great however there are a can of worms that Apple has worked so hard to keep close unlike other vendors that they would be opening and exposing the company to warranty factors , costs that they did not have before.

Not interested and too gimmicky! Still doesn’t look appealing to me.

How about bringing back the classic 3D Touch instead?
Yep I agree @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 with you still not my cup of tea. Love my iphone and for me (with big hands) the 14 ProMax is perfect close to having a small tablet wherever I go, and the interface I love — still not liking android OS interface on new phones some of my kids have.

Disclaimer: if you are not someone who uses a mini tablet/tablet along with a cell phone often and would appreciate having both devices in one, this post is not for you.

I was skeptical at first regarding foldables as well, until I traded in my iPhone 12 Pro Max for the Z Fold 3. I couldn't wait any longer for Apple to release a foldable phone and I was using my iPhone and iPad Mini all the time so I figured it would be great to have a 2 in 1. I have the Z Fold 4 now and I will never go back to a traditional slab phone. I love having a cell phone and mini tablet in one pocketable device. I prefer having the Z Fold 4 in my pocket over the iPhone Pro Max, as the iPhone Pro Max is too wide to be comfortable. The Z Fold 4 is a multi-tasking beast as well. I believe Apple will make a great foldable phone, and if/when they do I will consider coming back to iOS. If you are on the fence at all, give a foldable a try. It is impossible to understand how great they are unless you've owned one. You can always return it, if you don't like it. Android has come a long way over the past 4-5 years, and this is coming from someone who used to absolutely despise it. I found that Android 12 and 13 to be just as stable as iOS, which has gone downhill drastically over the past 3-4 years. For reference, I had owned every iPhone from the 4 to the 12. Food for thought anyway 😁

Side note: I had a Z Flip 4 as a backup phone and it was not good. I just don't understand the appeal of this type of foldable. Having to unfold it all the time for pretty much anything you want to do. It was a huge no-go for me anyway. To each their own though of course.
Well for me (with large hands) all the ProMax series phones are my perfect “min tablet” to retain my beloved iOS. Yep there are issues as they add in my view too many features to iOS but I look at the androids my oldest daughter and husband have I find that it still is too unlike iphone iOS interface and just not organized to fit my brain well. Had same problem with windows devices, for some reason Mac, iPhone and iPad organize the desktop in way that fits with my own way of thinking. But I can see for someone where the ProMax is a bit too large other considerations might be in order but I am sure not gonna buy a android foldable for my wife who likes smallet phone - I am house IT department (she is not techy) and i am only gonna support one ecosystem that keeps our house hold of apple devices working together LOL. Thats my two cents

Right, and I'm not saying foldables are for everyone by any means.

Stick to figuring out AR. Screens are going to be for secondary usage soon.

Yep I know you are not, everyone needs to evaluate their own preferences and personal needs I found your post most interesting reason I have ever read to even consider such a path. My household is a pure apple ecosystem though as i mentioned (see tag below) and I like how my 14 Pro Max and my wife’s older smaller iPhone work with all of it. With the complexities of latest smartphones (apple or android) and their respective Operating Systems (probably why iOS is a bit more buggy lately —- too much bloat in my view LOL). And my wife is not techie as i mentioned so it is easier to support just one ecosystem in house — and sometmes that can be a chore with her phone and iPad LOL. Thanks for sharing your view something to file away.

I don't care about foldable phones or tablets but imagine a macbook that is all screen including the keyboard area.

I have no use for this. Just about everything Apple makes has a great screen experience so no, I won't be buying anything with an ugly folded seam running down the middle.

Wait - you honestly think Apple’s solution will also include the same issue that is the #1 most criticized aspect of current foldable tech? No way, José.

Anytime, and thank you for sharing your view as well. That is what this website is all about...or it should be anyway!

I am not sure I see a need for foldable Apple devices. I know it sounds crazy but I would rather have the Apple AR glasses than any kind of foldable device!

I still think two rigid screens joined by a precision hinge would be better than a 'foldable' screen - every one of which I have seen in the wild has a godawful crease in it. Save the bendable displays for curved devices that remain static, like armlets and watches/watch bands.

I think the unexpected versatility of being able to angle part of the display to your liking for example when your device is on a table top or nightstand is being underestimated. It's funny to see a product being reviewed before it even exists!
