Are there examples of other companies that do a lot of business in China predicting a major shortfall for this same time period? The last time the United States engaged in major tariff battles was back in the 1920s. It's not like Apple had recent history to base their evaluations on. In some ways, it's uncharted territory for the current global economy.

It’s hard to even make a direct comparison to other companies because Apple is far and away the most successful foreign company in China. It’s not even close. So as a result, when they fall short there it impacts their bottom line in a significant way.

To put all of this in perspective: Apple’s quarterly earnings for this quarter are nearly that of Microsofts annual revenue. Annual. They’re over double that of Facebooks annual revenue. Did they sell fewer iPhones in China than they’d hoped? Yes. Is that a problem long term? Possibly but it’s certainly not the end of the world to be reporting the second best quarter in your companys history.

Everyone is so eager to see Apple fail that they don’t look at this with any kind of perspective. The noise from the press on this the last few days has been absurd.

They want to just hide behind China but this runs deeper. "In some developed markets, iPhone upgrades also were not as strong as we thought they would be" to "consumers adapting to a world with fewer carrier subsidies"

Gravy train is coming to an end

Haha great. This’ll teach Cook a thing or two, plus this year they have some big investigations into their battery scandles being concluded.

Why are you happy? You seem way too immature to be an investor so you aren't getting any money out of this. You can't spell the word scandal correctly either so that says a lot. I guess it is the cool thing to do to hate on popular brands these days.

And yet it’s market cap is now LESS then Google and Microsoft and Amazon.. the share holders do not have the same opinion as you.

How’s this even possible.

It’s like someone saying ‘I gambled my money and lost! Why didn’t someone warn me I could lose!’

When you have billions of dollars, everyone wants a piece of the pie and will try anything to get it.

What a stupid comment, you think you have to be a share holder to comment on this story? And immature? And you can blame the precious iOS useless auto correct if it’s not spelt correctly, but if that’s all you got, weak insults, then don’t bother replying.
When people pick on spelling or grammar it’s a sign they have no legitimate sensible discussion to add.

The real problem is they are charging too much for their products. This causes folks to hold out until it is absolutely necessary to upgrade or look at alternatives. Apple needs to adapt by accepting lower profit margins and probably make a Smart TV bundled around services.

You are struggling to put together coherent sentences yet you are blaming iOS autocorrect? Funny.

Ummm, they kinda DID warn. That's how the lawyers found out so they could file the lawsuit that they didn't warn. Not warning would be waiting until you have to disclose at the quarterly earnings announcement. Normally this would only make the lawyers rich, but since this is Apple, even they will walk away with nothing.

The thing that brings into question Cook's accuracy is that as short as a month ago, Apple was claiming everything was fine and they were on target. So either he was extremely ignorant of the realities of the china market, or, he was intentionally misleading and hiding the china turn down until it was too late to.

Two months ago, November 1st, is the last time they released info.

There is very little talking about the future in China. The only things Apple talked about was gaming regulations in China.

So I don't see where they said that everything was fine in China during the quarter.

Exactly! Investments can either come with a gain (which is what every investor hopes for) or a loss. I see this as a desperate attempt by the investors (the ones looking at the lawsuit option) to try and recoup some of their losses.
I don't feel they have any merit.

I'm not sure why you think this way.

Many people who aren't rich own 401K plans through their employer. These plans invest in a multitude of places including Apple stock.

Yes, I’m not sure anyone here gets how stocks work. Globally corporations invest pensions and ISA’s, other savings accounts, into stocks, so when your one of the biggest copeations invested in and you’re seen to be lying and/ or price fixing, their are severe consequences. Because it can affect Jo Bloggs pension pot.

When the Cell phone companies subsidized phones, I would upgrade every 2 years because it would cost me $200-$300 every 24 months plus selling the old one, I'd do ok. Now that I have to pay the actual cost, I'm keeping my 6s until 2020 or whenever the 5g phones come out. The technology is amazing in these things and it's like having a computer in your pocket but I'm starting to keep my apple products longer and longer because the prices are high.

You are also keeping your Apple products longer and longer because they are powerful when released, well made so they last, and supported with software updates.

This is nuts. I think even they were caught off guard...... but none the less to any investor it’s been clear that China has been a challenge for Apple for years. Think the best year was the first year they made the Plus models.

I lost a lot in Apple stock but these lawsuits are a joke. As an investor you enter the markets knowing you can both lose and gain value

Some of these lawsuits are basically shakedowns of the companies. There is an entire business model around it. But the threat of them also keep the public companies on their toes and help insure that public statements are accurate. Many lawyers who do this believe they are providing a public service with these lawsuits.

Also, I'm sure Cook's statement about 4Q being up in 2018 from last year's 4Q was correct. But 1Q did not turn out to have the huge sale they were expecting with XS and XR in full production. Both these things can be true. But if a judge authorizes the class action, then Apple will have to prove it in court.

More like the house said it would earn $89B worst case, but didn’t tell when they realized it wouldn’t happen. My guess Apple hoped for a Christmas Hail Mary and it didn’t happen. If that’s ok or not is up to the court if it goes that far.

Wall Street thinks these companies will eventually produce revenue that is greater than Apple. I could certainly see it for Google and Amazon (though I don't believe they will). I haven't understood Microsoft's business model for years now. As far as I can tell, they make two products that are sold in size sufficient to justify a 100s of billions in market cap: the Windows OS and the Office Suite of software. However, they have competitors in Google and Apple who basically make better versions of these things (in the OS area) or who give away competitive products (in the productivity suite). I know Microsoft does more than this. But I just don't know what it is that has the scale.
