Surprised Tim forgot to allow an opt-out since he loves privacy so much.

Also, since when is 1% a "small" amount? Imagine if 1% of financial transactions disappeared into thin air, or 1% of planes crashed...

How big a number will Apple still try to claim is "small" in their automatically-generated press releases?

"The plaintiffs in the case, one of whom is a minor, claim to own an iPhone XR and an iPhone 6 that they would not have purchased had they known that their Siri recordings were stored for evaluation."

Ummm, I call BS on this statement. Show me one minor who would say no to an XR. And thats even if they knew about the recordings.

More money grabbing from Apple over something this lame. Sure they may have recorded stuff accidentally, but there is no way I can believe that someone would actually say..."wait, it accidentally might, maybe, sometimes record something? I don't care, give me the phone..."

Sigh, what a screwed up world we live in.

This was to be expected. If Apple's name appears in the news. Lawyers smell blood.

"What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone" ... apparently not.

Apple has made HUGE statements about privacy, "Privacy is King" , and it turns out that is 'misleading' at best.

Will I opt-in, nope because you have shown that you are no more trustworthy than any other company when it suits you.

99% of what happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone*

*1% sent to third party contractors

Oh, and really, I don't care too much when a company says "we process the data strictly in accordance with privacy laws of blablabla", or when a spokeshuman says "we have a strict contract with them". They imagine that a law or a contract is some sort of a magical piece of paper that makes things happen out of thin air. And when you sign an NDA with your subcontractor, they are bound to it to their core and it physically impossible for them to overstep the provisions. What a ton of bull!

Apple has the drug deal calls and has something to barter with but I really don't see this going anywhere.

1% of the millions of Apple products is still a crap ton of people. Oops.
It wasn't 1% of the products. It was less than 1% of daily Siri interactions. So if you take all of the devices, then take ~1% of all of the Siri interactions on all of the devices every day. From there multiply that times 365 days in a year. That would give you a better indication of how many calls were recorded. Back in Jan 2018 Apple said that Siri was actively used on over a half billion devices.

Regardless of how you add it up, that's a crap ton of recordings. I believe they're mostly benign, but that's still a crap ton.

Are they suing Google and Amazon as well?
I guess there are separate lawsuits. There surely was a crapton of lawsuits about Alexa listening in on people, or Ring's AI being powered by subcontractors. But you know how media work, nobody is droning about news three weeks old, and lawsuits are typically slooooow.

Where were the lawsuits when it was discovered that Google and Amazon do the same thing? Why is it a lawsuit-worthy issue only when Apple does it?

If your Hey Siri conversation comprises 100% of your phone usage then you are doing something wrong.

(Which would have to be the case if you think 1% of your phone usage goes to outside contractors)

I really can't understand how my activity could possibly be worth their time! I'M BORING!

It will be interesting to see the cognitive dissonance in other Apple users who simultaneously think their information is so important they need FaceID securing it (TouchID is just too insecure) yet also think it's fine if 1% of their conversations are randomly sent to contractors

The microphone that records random conversations and the chip that sends them to Apple are certainly on your iPhone

Try turning off your cellular and WiFi and see how well Siri works. Even something as simple as play a song that's on your phone.

Yeah apparently the sound of a zipper can trigger Siri.. There was an article about the different sounds that could trigger "Hey Siri"

I would love to read this article, do you have the link?

it is NOT, I repeat NOT, 1% of your conversations. It is 1% of conversations that trigger Siri. What percentage of your conversations do you think do that?

Yeah and isn't it supposed to only react to your voice?
There's a few different things regarding this. iPhone can be isolated to your voice, and your voice alone for the trigger phrase. Homepod isn't able to isolate voices yet. It's coming in Homepod OS 13. Once it launches you'll be able to train it to the different voices in your home and provide personal requests to each user in it's system. However, I highly doubt that they intend to only allow it accept requests from those voices in it's database. Google Home has a similar functionality, but is still able to be triggered by various videos.

The Homepod is a 'public' facing device meaning that it can be used by anyone in the home. So if iJustine did come over, she'd be able to use your Homepod as well, she wouldn't be able to use your device for personal requests though. Just the basics that Siri does, music, lights, timers, etc.

That's my understanding anyways.

Apparently many that involve a word that sounds like "S..."

Looks like some lawyer is going to make $46 million dollars and each of us will make a buck fifty-seven. WOO-HOO CAN'T WAIT.
