Connected home sensors with HomeKit integration from Elgato.

Really hoping they can make it work with the Scout alarm system. They're just clearing customs right now and should be shipping this week.

It's annoying that I can only find my iPhone with the apps and only use homekit with my iphone. What if I only have an iPad?

/s

Wish it was Find My Device and Made for iOS ..

Anyway, neeto. Can't wait, just need to get some kit! Refuse to pay £50 for a bulb though...maybe £10.

"letting users easily control HomeKit-connected devices from their living rooms through the Apple TV dashboard"

Yep, super easy... "Hey, Honey, can you turn the lights off?" "Yeah, let me just head downstairs, turn the TV on, turn the Apple TV on, and turn the surround sound receiver on. Then after it loads, I'll fumble through the dashboard because the Apple TV remote buttons are too small... Wait. What did you want me to turn off again?"

Seriously. Even if you were already watching cable, you'd have to switch HDMI inputs to get to the Apple TV, then go through this process. Or even if you're watching a movie on Apple TV, you still have to leave that movie to access the HomeKit.

I would think using your phone or an iPad mini that controls the house is probably a bit easier.

Yes, but isn't this in addition to your phone or iPad? I mean anything your Apple TV can do your much more powerful iPhone can do as well. The one exception being to be connected to your Home's wifi while you are out of the house.

I think it is mainly just a link back to your home. Or something to give you a big screen to review data related to your home. But even your computer should be available to do all this anyway.

I think the Apple TV is possibly EOL. TV is just part of what I think the new box will be

Gaming
TV
Home automation with homekit
Communication

Always on, always listening can track your phone to within a foot, and with the new barometer it can even tell what floor your on.

So it's going to be a whole new ecosystem with an App Store.

Could be called Apple Home or Apple TV Home, but from interviews Tim Cook seems to think TV is so dated, tele-vision is dead:D

Nest Protect is the only one I know of that's on the market right now. I'm sure others will be coming.

First Alert also has a a wave detector for around $40. if you go to lowes its labeled as Isis, but works with Zwave controllers. It probably won't work with home kit though since it's Zwave and not mifi certified. Too bad no existing devices will work since mifi is required which will probably double the cost of current devices. I guess I'll just stick with the Almond +.

Wake me up when light bulbs don't cost $59.

The non-colored variety cost around $15.

You really haven't done any research on this at all have you? Apple TV is merely a hub for these products, your other iOS devices do the commands.

You do know Apple ultimately wants to replace your cable box right? So switching hdmi inputs would not be necessary. As I understand it, currently all smart home devices have their own apps. This will allow the apple tv to act as the hub. And you in turn control all with your iPhone or iPod apple watch etc

You didnt get it. You dont have to use the Apple TV. Its just a hub. Think you are away and you want to turn the lights off. Take out your iphone and it sends a signal to the apple TV which is controlling the lights at your home to shut the light off. Your iphone isnt talking to the bulbs directly.

Without the Apple TV hub, the iPhone will talk to the Philips hub, however.

A lot of this is already out there and available. I'm in the middle of a home automation project using the Insteon line of products controlled by a central WIFI enabled hub and managed via iOS (iPhone and iPad). Exterior lights on/off at sunset and sunrise or on demand via the app, interior lighting controlled by schedule or on demand via the app, lighting on/off with wifi motion sensors (REALLY nice in the middle of the night when the need to hit the bathroom comes around at 2 A.M, no stumbling around), garage door control, wifi cameras, thermostat, leak detection, etc.

Fairly inexpensive, which is a huge plus.

The problem is that there are too many "standards" and the newer products are far less DIY. This will talk to your Insteon line as well as any other seamlessly.

I'd personally love to have a smoke alarm that I could monitor from afar. It'd be good for the peace of mind!

You can do this already. Simply add a relay module or bridge to your $10 existing hardwired interconnected smokes and CO2 alarms.

First Alert: http://www.smarthome.com/insteon-2982-222-smoke-bridge.html

A heck of a lot cheaper than a bunch of overpriced Nest Protect smokes. Also keep in mind revised NFPA/NEC code now requires you to replace smokes every 10 years, regardless of manufacturer. You will no longer be able to sell a house with expired smokes. I have 10 smokes in my home. I would rather spend $100 vs. $1000 every 10 years.

"...adjust thermostat, turn off lights, close garage door from your apple TV in your living room..."

iLazy!

But what if you're iBusy?

I would imagine that in 10 years, all modern smoke detectors would be of the smart variety...and cheap too.

My Nest Protects function as more than just smoke alarms, they're also nightlights in the hallways and sensors for the Nest thermostat.

I can't imagine using an :apple:TV to manage homekit or the connected devices, at least in its current iteration.

I remember my brother had on-screen notifications through his cable provider of some home automation stuff, it was odd and annoying.

No. It's a hardware hub within your wifi -- think control tower. Not a UI on screen.

I've been doing Siri voice control since 2013 and home automation even longer. HomeKit does nothing for home automation systems which are already centralized.

Just about to get a set of Hue lights - anyone know whether the current gen set will get a firmware update to support HomeKit - I'd hate to splash out £180 to find them out of date within a month!

No! What will happen is regulations will force all the inexpensive smokes out of the market and consumers will be forced to upgrade to overpriced smokes with even more limited choices.

I'm personally very excited about doing whole home automation. I'm just holding for now until I know what'll be certified and what won't.

This is definitely cool, but why can we still not automate more simple settings and tasks on the iPhone itself??

So far, the only semblance of any time and location based automation are Reminders and the do not disturb settings.

What are you referring to? iOS offers geofencing, apps can make use of it - my Hue system can turn on when I get home. My Hue system also uses time-based automation to turn on various lighting recipes in the house during different times of the day. It's programmed via iOS and runs on a hardware hub of its own, hopefully soon to be replaced with the Apple TV.
