mine turned itself off again sometime overnight and won't reenable. maybe a reboot will fix it.

Still without since yesterday again.
Today it should had been fixed but I get, again
Wait Till Tomorrow
I found this on https://9to5mac.com/2024/07/29/icloud-private-relay-outage-2/

The outage lasted a very long time, with Apple’s status page not showing it resolved until the early hours of Sunday morning.

iCloud Private Relay – Resolved Issue
07/25/2024, 7:34 PM – Yesterday, 3:59 AM
Some users were affected
This service may have been slow or unavailable.
In Apple terminology, “a few” users affected means quite a lot, while “some” means a great many.

XCode Cloud issues remain

It’s unclear whether the problem is related, but developers have been reporting that XCode Cloud has been experiencing problems since Friday, and that the issue is not yet resolved.”

I guess we are the lucky ones 😵‍💫
A very strange thing happens though : even if I’m disconnected from internet and play the PrivateRelay switch on and off , I still get the notification …till tomorrow
At this point it’s my computer that has some preference stuck on no Private Relay

My guess is that they are not getting the right talent, because anyone competent and interested in designing and maintaining cloud infrastructure, and at the same time not even more interested in other roles at Apple, probably doesn’t have Apple very high on their list.
Yes, this is very likely the case, but nothing you can't fix with a proper salary and competitive bonus packages, especially when the Services division is driving more and more revenue for you over time.

Apple has resolved the iCloud Private Relay service outage, restoring full functionality for users around the world after several days of disruption.

icloud-private-relay-outage.jpg

The recent iCloud Private Relay outage began at 02:34 AM Eastern Time on Thursday and lasted until 10:59 PM Eastern Time on Saturday. The issue disrupted web browsing for some users for over 48 hours, which is an unusually long period for an Apple service outage. The problem was confirmed by Apple through its System Status webpage, where it noted that the service might have been slow or unavailable.

iCloud Private Relay is a feature available to iCloud+ subscribers, designed to enhance privacy by encrypting browsing data and routing it through two separate relay servers. One of these servers is operated by Apple, while the other is managed by a third party. This setup ensures that neither Apple, internet service providers, nor the websites visited can access users' true browsing information. The service's dual-relay mechanism helps maintain a high level of privacy by separating the user's IP address from their DNS queries, which further obscures the user's online activity.

Users who had disabled iCloud Private Relay to mitigate browsing issues can now go ahead and re-enable the feature to continue utilizing its privacy benefits.

It doesn't seem they fixed it at all , at least for several users like us still reporting that doesn't work 🙄

Behold the power of Apple’s stellar services offering. Maybe they can also start locking iCloud accounts again for unknown reasons
With no transparency it is hard to trust Apple services like this.

Hmm, seems there was a chorus of nose-thumbing here over the recent Windows/CrowdStrike meltdown.

Now I have zero love or apologies for MS or CrowdStrike. But should keep in mind our garden has its rocks and sinkholes too...

But we don't need to just accept the rocks and sinkholes, or we will get more of the same.

I’m still getting an error in iOS mail. When I load images, it says:

Your network setting prevent content from loading privately

Is anyone still getting this error? Any idea how I can fix it?

Go to Mail-Settings-Privacy, turn off Protect Mail activity
and see if it's ok for you to
Hide ip address
Block remote content

I just checked this setting. It’s already turned off. iCloud private relay is also
turned off. I never turned those settings on. I’m still getting this error message.

I see hide IP address and block all remote content are both switched on. Should they be off to fix this issue?

If you want to have “load remote images” you need to uncheck
Block remote content
But in this case your privacy will be none

So try another company if that’s what you think of Apple now. Why are you still on the platform?
Because the alternatives are still much worse. It’s just disappointing as a long time user as Apple was so much better in the past. Part of the problem is that they have succumbed to feature creep over the last 10 years.

Whatever they fixed, it wasn't ICPR. Getting notifications showing that it is available and then after some time unavailable again over past days and also today.

As usual, Tim's Apple is clueless... :p

I’m assuming if I leave this on, at some point the error will be fixed? I’d rather keep privacy and have this issue sorted at some point.

I did not have an issue with this in Monterey Mail—with 'Protect Mail Activity' enabled—until this latest iCloud Private Relay issue, then I started seeing the same error message you posted about on mail messages. I've found 2 clients (also on Monterey) message that they're seeing the same problem. None of us had iCloud Private Relay enabled; all of us have had 'Protect Mail Activity' enabled, without issue prior.

Today, I spent a little time troubleshooting, and I found that the 'Hide IP Address' feature seemed to be the issue; if I disabled 'Protect Mail Activity', but left 'Hide IP address' enabled, I'd get the same error.

In searching, I found a post at Tidbits by Adam Angst that did a bit of a dive into iCloud Private Relay, and he recommended disabling the 'Limit IP Address Tracking' feature on the network adapter in System Preferences > Network… sure enough, that worked! With 'Limit IP address Tracking' disabled, I could re-enable 'Protect Mail Activity' in Mail and the message on messages was gone and images loaded.

Now… what is actually HAPPENING? I have no idea. And that's pretty much the gist of Adam Engst's article: Apple is hiding so much stuff behind interlocking features and confusing descriptions, NOBODY seems to know. I hope that 'Protect Mail Activity' is, indeed, hiding my IP address from trackers and ad networks when loading images, but I don't know that; what I do know is that Apple/Mail isn't reflecting that the feature is not working, or working at some reduced functionality. Which kinda sucks, I expect better from Apple. I also speculate that this could, effectively, be a telegraphing that the 'Limit IP Address Tracking' feature and, perhaps, 'iCloud Private Relay' may already be dead in Monterey, ahead of Monterey's official 'unsupported' status coming in October.

There is a very simple task to do: check on different website your ip address
Several websites will tell you if your ip is hidden by Private Relay or you are behind a VPN- Private Relay shows as one-
Doing that I just discovered that Safari when PR works, hides the ip
Safari Technology Preview doesn't, bummer!

Right now after restarting with PR off and setting it on again , it works, for now.🤞
I 100% agree with you that Apple is messing up with us and using convolute and confusing rules that is hard to understand It's not the Apple that convinced me to jump on board
If something better was available I would have switched boat already.

It's definitely still having issues. I've just disabled it on my Mac and needless to say, web pages load at least 2x times faster with no connection timeouts.

Seriously, Apple, this is starting to be very, very embarrassing for you.

I dont really think Apple has proven competent or to be trusted in this area- though I admire what they are going for. Still, AdGuard DNS does it well, but then again it’s their main offering. None of my stuff gets hoovered up looking at mail or on the web. My “profile” is so out of wack that I get ads for all sorts of things that would be relevant to a child, an octogenarian, and someone that speaks Portuguese. Apple needs to be better if they are gonna keep banging on the privacy drum because this is inexcusable.

Edit: that is, when I actually see an ad- which is rare with AdGuard. Even free games that show interstitial ads between levels just silently fail so no ads just game. Which is lovely.

My M3 MacBook Pro is still experiencing severe intermittent symptoms of the outage. iCloud is essentially down and won’t even load the iCloud settings menu native to the settings on the computer. I can’t load News, Mail or anything else without intermittent issues. Interestingly, chrome isn’t functioning well either, nor is any other internet connected service. All other devices on the same WiFi network work well.

So I called Apple support this evening and after ages, it’s been sorted. They made me turn on private relay (which I’ve never had on), which resolved it. I told them that shouldn’t affect it as I’ve never had it on anyway, so they let me turn it off again and I can load emails without the network issue. Had to do a phone reboot.
