Alderwood Mall,WA Apple Store had over 1,000.

Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego had thousands (according to the sales person) - at 6:30 they had sold out of all 3G Models and the 32G White. We called all the other Apple Stores here and they were 100% sold out of all models. (Mission Valley is the #1 volume store in the region).

So by all accounts, anywhere but an official apple store got VERY few ipad 2's (on the order of 5-50), and apple stores still not a lot... There are how many apple stores in the world, a few hundred?

So we're looking at what, a few thousand ipads total... maybe 10-20k tops?

So how are people coming up with these 500k figures, are these including online pre-orders that will ship in a few weeks?

You're kidding right? A few thousand? I seriously doubt it. Try like several hundred thousand. I don't think Apple is in the business of defrauding it's investors with faulty sales figures. I think that kind of stuff is against the law.

That's not hard to do :D

Apple is doing whatever they usually do for online sales. So they are charging cc's when the product for the order is in production.

Wrong. Apple will authorize the card. They only actually charge it when the product is shipped. I have bought from them many times online and several times I had to wait for the items. My card was not charged until the day I got my email shipping notice. Don't bash them with speculation.

Just left Westfarms (CT) and a staffer thought they went through 1000 iPad2 by midday Sat. If every Apple store did that, it starts to add up quick.

The Best Buy I went to had a couple hundred at least. I was about 60th in line, and the line was 3-4 times longer behind me than in front of me. Looked like everyone got a sheet with their device on it that was in line. The Target next door got 5. Best Buy looks like it was a pretty big launch partner for sure. No matter how you shake it, more iPad 2s were sold in the first hour on Friday than Xooms will likely be sold for the foreseeable future.

According to the employees at my Apple store they turned something on the order of 2k iPads on launch day. I wouldn't call 2k "not a lot."

I think many stores (those in bid cities I guess) had at least 2-3k on launch day. An Apple employee was counting the number of people when I first got into the queue. She told me there were about 250 people in front of me. That was 2 hours before the launch. Since then the queue doubled, and some people already in the queue had friends came and joined them. As far as I know, many of them bought more than 1 unit.

Unlike Amazon and many other online stores, which charge your credit card only when the order is shipped, Apple charges your card the moment you placed your order. So I guess they also counted that as a sale.

Do keep in mind that our government purchases 500,000 iPad 2, lock up inside a mountain in case of a nuclear attack. That way, the 10 citizens that are still alive can use a fully charged iPad 2 with fast internet speed. :D

It's true for the iPad 2 orders that I placed online. Immediately after I placed my Apple store ordered, I logged into my back account and saw the charge already popping up.

May have been an authorization. I'm pretty sure they can't legally deduct the funds from your account until the shipment is sent. They can, however, put a hold.

Right or wrong Apple does what Apple wants & fanboys will argue to defend them forever :)

If by "fanboy" you mean "pointing out reality" then you have come to the right thread.

Care to put your money where your mouth is and show us what fanboy defenses are being used here? Do you honestly think Apple has only sold a few thousand iPads? That they released a sales number no one else has seen? That despite numerous people pointing out how the card system works they are charging you too early?

If you're not familiar with ozred's presence here on the boards, nearly all his posts are some variation on Apple-bashing MadLibs. Curious how he'd want to lurk on the Forum just to interject his poorly-placed criticism.
