if this "bending" issue is more than a few devices I could see another free case program

I doubt it. Apple may have known about the bending issues, but I think if they did they decided not to worry about it since otherwise they couldn't get it as thin as they want.

It was a piece of rubber that costs them about 86 cents to have manufactured. Not really a big give away to cover up an issue for a minor percentage of users.
