I was pretty floored by the headline number until i realised it meant *all* commerce facilitated via its app store apps.

So for instance, my purchases on ebay that i made using my ebay app on my ipad.

Regardless, i can imagine some executives frothing at the mouth; trying to find ideas to monetise those transactions.

people who want to side load apps can buy Android phones, there are options.
Please don't ruin for us who like to download apps from App Store.
once Apple allos side loading apps, iOS app store would be like MacOS App store, few crappy apps in there.
we are forced to take risks.
Don’t fall for the apple fed paranoia, you are adult enough to vet the apps that you want to install.
I look forward to getting a new life for my iPad Pro by installing (hopefully) an emulator from WMware or having the steam store and getting the possibility to install the few games I own there (some of them where available on the App Store at some point but where all pulled out). It will be a win for everyone!

As a developer it is all kind of meaningless until they fix the search. As you can see in this search for "chess", the World No1 chess player's five star app with 1000s of ratings is below a 3 star app with 18 ratings. It's like Apple are choosing the winners and losers.

Conversely, it puts into perspective how little Apple does monetize the App Store.

What does being "adult" have to do with vetting apps? When I was a kid, I'd spend a whole bunch of time vetting apps. As an adult, I realize there are much better ways to spend my time.

My point is that the money saved would likely be spent elsewhere. So the implication that the app store is benefiting the economy to any significant degree seems tenuous to me. I’m not sure if studies of any depths could provide proof either way, due to the What Ifs involved.

Yeah, I don't think the sales made through Amazon's app were responsible for Amazon having significantly more sales. They would have just used the website, or in an open ecosystem, a different app provided by Amazon.

I do find it interesting, however, that for all its statements on privacy, Apple is not only able to see the sales of physical goods but is actively collecting data about that.

That's simply not true. Apple does not track sales of physical goods. They contracted with a third-party to provide analysis of available data from market research firms and individual companies.
