I agree with Dieter Bohn, the press molded edges look cheap. They could have followed the design language of the iPhone and made this with an aluminum band wrapping each side, with a simple hinge mechanism. As is, it just looks cheap. I can see value in its utility and would appreciate it for travel but wouldn’t buy it at that price point. Also, no included charging brick? C’mon...

The watch-only version has been around for years. This should have anchored the price for anyone with genuine interest.

People saying it “should” cost $59, $75, $99: where are you getting these numbers from? Random guessing? Just wishing it was within your budget then complaining when it’s not?

If this was $99 with the power adaptor included maybe. $129 and no power adaptor not a chance. Will continue to use a multi-port power adaptor and 2 cables.
It could be free and I still wouldn't use it.

Slower charging than with lightning cable (iPhone 12 mini) and it leaves a nice ring imprint around your iPhone 12 MagSafe accessories.

Subjective. After using the MagSafe from day one with the iPhone 12, I find it much more convenient than plugging in, I can personally see myself never plugging in an iPhone again tbh. Not all accessories will be worth the hype, and they can improve on the magsafe charger itself, but even as is, I find it annoying to need to plug in now.
I haven't plugged in since 2015, but then again, I haven't owned an Apple phone since the iPhone 4s.

That said, objections of price for this device are somewhat unnecessary: Apple stuff has always been expensive, and the option to use inexpensive wireless chargers has been on the table for half a decade or more.

Those (like myself) that don't like the price or functionality of this device can use something else.

When my company finally updates my Note 8 this winter (I get to choose between iOS and Android) I'll be going iPhone 12, but my (Qi) wireless charger won't change.

This is very disappointing. It looks very cheap and it's very expensive. It's almost 50% more expensive than buying the chargers separately.

Hard to see this getting much traction being so late to market as a category. I use and love the Nomad wireless base station w/ the Apple Watch option. It was $129 and you can still find it for that. They've since updated/added models but the original one for $129 is the best, and I think the best on the market period. I helped Kickstart Slice too and that isn't anywhere near as good.

I agree this is no Nomad, I use the Nomad at work. But I would never travel with the nomad and I travel a lot. I would travel with duo charger. Different markets.

MagSafe looking poor. Can imagine the transition to port-less design won’t be smooth. Will they include MagSafe with the next phone?
Portless is going to be a nightmare if Apple doesn’t figure this out. In theory you can backup and transfer files from a Mac to an iOS device that are on the same network, but in practice this never works. It either fails to load, fails to recognize the transfer or just fails halfway through the process. For someone like me that routinely transfers audio files and photos directly going portless would be enough of a deal breaker to get me to quit iOS completely.

I have a hard time seeing this as anything but a travel accessory. Sure you could use it on your nightstand, and pack it when you travel, but it doesn't have the "polished and permanent" look of something that would be out and in use daily. I could carry it to work and use it there, but I never charge my watch at work, so a regular charger, MagSafe or otherwise, is fine.

The price is a little disappointing, but I'm still tempted for the travel convenience.

It’s way too expensive for what you get. You could find the Apple Watch charging dock on eBay for $35.00. Add in the MagSafe charger and 20W Power adapter and your at $93 plus the Apple Watch dock actually comes with a cable. And all you need is 5W charger for the watch which we all have laying around in a drawer somewhere.

I wonder how many Apple employees write comments in here. When I look at the comments about this “revolutionary piece of art” I bet they are pretty active here...

If 15w from the 20w charger is going to the phone there is only 5w less overhead going to the watch. Speed is being shortchanged on this expensive charger. Pointed out by Gruber.

The purpose of a magnet in an iPhone charger is beyond me... does anyone charge their phones hanging on the ceiling? Oh the perfect alignment... Gimmick.

So Apple will release a two device charge only to later release a three device charge when the new AirPod Pro 2 comes out... I see what they’re doing. I’ll pass for now, considering most Apple users will have all three devices why only make a two device charger

No, just not buying it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My issue isn’t with price, it’s with the sorry design work by Apple. I own that watch charger and it is great, but this duo charger fails at its primary purpose. Their premier MagSafe/Watch charger lifts up when you pick up the phone. They should have went with some kind of reusable adhesive on the bottom to allow for MagSafe alignment with a normal wireless charger usability’s being able to just grab the phone. As a nightstand charger any Qi device beats this in usability.

That plus this thing isn’t even going to be charging at 15w since it is powered by the same overpriced 20w wall wart and has to charge the watch at the same time.

It eliminates the chance of misalignment that some of experienced with Qi chargers, i.e. not finding that sweet spot and waking up to an uncharged iPhone. The magnets guarantee the MagSafe puck be aligned and charge at capacity.

Which is actually a pretty big deal - poor alignment is, in my experience, a massive drawback with many chargers. In fact I specifically bought a rectangular one the size of my phone so I could position it correctly by touch alone.

Yeah, I actually bought my wife the Nomad base station with Apple Watch charger and she got so frustrated with finding the sweet spot on it with her 8+. We traded for my Mophie charge pad, and bingo bongo, it worked better for her and I’ve no issue using the Nomad. Magnetic alignment just eliminates any user error.

I've had that happen once, misaligning the charger, but that's once out of hundreds of times over the last couple years of overnight charging. MagSafe has uses cases yet to come that are of more value to me than a stationary charging pad and a wallet. I'm not sold on this feature yet but time – and accessories – will tell.

It’s hit or miss for some, as I related in the experience above, but by and large a non issue for most I would say. I only ever experience misses when wireless charging my AirPods. I suspect that the smaller Qi footprint on the AirPods makes it harder for me to know when I’ve made a good connection wirelessly. Seems like a 50/50 chance I will get it right. This is on a Nomad base station. On my combo desk light/Qi charger, where my XS charges reliably, charging the AirPods won’t work.
