I despise Facebook but I think Apple made a decent decision here, it’s not about them, it’s not about Epic&co’s war on the “Apple Tax”, it’s about helping some real-world small businesses in the midst of an economic struggle to survive. Not selling marshmallow hammers in a clown suit to gamers or whatever.

So once again a dust up happens and Apple reverses/changes/relaxes its policies. All that tells me is Apple can’t really defend many of it’s policies. The only reason Apple is going to war with Epic and game streaming platforms is because game IAP is the bulk of App Store revenues and Apple will not reduce or give that up unless forced to.

Lol whatever happened to "no special treatment"? Even though this policy probably applies to all developers now, Apple should just ban Facebook (Instagram and WhatsApp too, because they're related), ClassPass, and Airbnb, and tell their users to go buy a different platform/device if they want to continue using their services. Because those people have choice and that would be the most logical, open-market, pro-competition view ever.

Even better, let’s ban all apps from the app store! That will show who’s the boss! Go Tim Apple!

I don’t use Facebook so couldn’t care about the specific app, but this of the problem. Just be consistent Apple.

I have a feeling that Epic will cite this development as an instance of Apple having double standards… 👀

No. They clearly said it was to help businesses affected by the pandemic. Games have not been affected. Apple could flip this on Epic to prove their profits where down a lot. Which they can’t do.

Apple is setting itself up to lose a lawsuit for arbitrary and unfair treatment just because the offender is huge and dishonest (Facebook and Amazon video)

“Pandemic” yeah right. The common cold and seasonal flu kills orders of magnitude more and no one gives a flying **** about those. Call it what it is, Apple caved for shortsighted gains in public perception amongst the chattering class, at great cost to itself in the long run and its customers who enjoy a high quality ecosystem.

It is surprising that Apple is playing nice these days. At least, 2 good news today's that pleases customers.

I do like this for small businesses. Now does it seem like a double standard(?), sure, but it’s a stepping stone for businesses who are transferring from doing business in their buildings to moving online.
Some businesses were built for digital - some for physical. This just gives those physical stores the ability to move to digital after they had been forced into not doing business most of the year.

Now I think facebook is one of the sleaziest companies on this planet...

But I don't like what Apple is turning into. Its probably a lot of legal chess, but it's taken a lot of shine off of the Apple that Steve Jobs built.

I think the lack of flexibility and reasonableness of these giant corporations with businesses and developers just doesn't sit well with me, and that includes Apple now.

Apple has very little leverage over many big apps that huge numbers of iPhone users rely on.

What would happen if WeChat told Apple they're going to pull WeChat from the app store overnight unless Apple starts giving them a cut of China iPhone sales?

FB just flexed on Apple. Tencent could too.

If you get a Ring doorbell camera and download the app, it takes you to Rings website to pay for the service with cam

Um, can you please stop speeding misinformation. I strongly suggest you take off your tinfoil hat.

Covid has already killed at least 200,000 more people in 8 months than the flu does in a year. Also, doctors worldwide research the flu and release vaccines every year for it. Your statement is dangerously incorrect.

Also, Steve Jobs died almost a decade ago. He was famous for saying there would never ever be a phone larger than the iPhone 4, that there would never be an iPad Mini as well as other mis steps. He was not a messiah so please stop worshipping him.

So Apply is playing favorites. I thought every developer was treated equally?

This applies to ALL developers, including Airbnb and ClassPass.

So, can every developer do this now? Or is apple giving special treatment now?

your question is answered in the article. Hint: it’s the part below the headline with the tiny words.

It’s killed more people this year than the flu, traffic accidents, and the Vietnam war, combined.

get a clue.
