I do wonder is Mavericks will be released alongside the new Mac Pro?

(I also think iOS7 will be released when the next iPhone is ready.

As a user of both neither is ready for public use. ;) Apple needs to get things polished before releasing software from here on out. We used to have to wait 2 yrs. for the next major OS. I do not fear for apple, but I do want them to push out great products that are ready.

the REAL QUESTION is.......if youve got a recent MAC, is it gonna be FREE......

....or will i have to bend over for $20 on the upgrade.....

anyone know?

You will have to bend over for $20. It's always like that. The upgrade is free only for those who buy a new mac only a few days before the release of a new version of OSX (like a month or something) and Apple tells you if it's the case when you buy your new mac.

In the face of all the developers who whine about how people shouldn't be allowed access to betas. Beta testing needs real world users, if Apple wanted to crack down on non-devs getting hold of betas they would, but it's actually an advantage to have more testers.

While this is true, it's likely being done more to give tech staff exposure to the software so they can support it on release day

Pity they don't do this with iOS. Or apparently give their tech staff any advanced detailed info about it.

----------

I know we call this a beta but think about what they have and have not changed. This is 10.8 code base with some new tweaks here and there.

Which is probably why there was no issue sending some Mac folks over to help with iOS 7, they had nothing really to do

----------

Agreed, it really should just be the Apple developer program for both iOS and OS X.

I don't mind it being split but it would be a a nice touch if adding the other one was perhaps cheaper say half price.

----------

Beta-testing needs people who have a reasonable amount of knowledge and experience, and who are able to ... TEST! and identify the difference between "a bug" and "a problem I have on my computer right now", so that Apple's Dev team can get useful, analytical feedback, rather than just noise.

Actually 'a problem I have in my computer' can still be useful depending on what it is.

And obviously dumb ass comments from idiots are generally easy to spot. So they aren't noise for long

No, as long as you don't see any mentions of Mav on your Mac purchase or the "Up-to-Date" program starts, you won't get a free update.

Apple usually give free updates to 1-2 months within the OS release. In this case, it's the Fall, so you're not likely to get any free updates.

Usually, you do not get a free update (when you buy a new computer) until the real *shipping* date is officially announced by Apple. In this case "later this fall" doesn't qualify as an official release date.

If they follow their usual routine, they will likely put up an "up-to-date" page on their Website for qualifying purchase when the time has come.

Yes. Retail employees sign a general NDA as part of the hiring process. It basically covers everything they come in contact with that's not official public knowledge.

Oh, that makes me suddenly wonder if I signed an NDA when I downloaded the betas or when I joined the Dev programs, or both. Much like Kyle, I don't actually read most* agreements I sign.

* Sometimes I do, particularly with institutions that have a reputation for screwing over customers with gotchas.

Then read the agreements you signed. They are very enlightening :)

For the illiterate, it can be summed up as "don't redistribute anything", and normally you're supposed to not talk in public about pre-release software. But this year they're done something different, and aren't banning people from discussing the new operating systems in the open.

Apple have developer forums, and it's an amazing treasure trove of official information ;)

But my point was both OS X and iOS are expected later this year, probably in the Fall and so are the next iPhone and Mac Pro so it's resonable to expect Apple might release iOS7 with the next iPhone and Mavericks with the new Mac Pro. No point IMO to release either hardware upgrade only to release the new software weeks later.

I do agree they both need to be ready though, no point getting either software then next week we get the first upgrade.
