As an AAPL shareholder, I applaud this.

Wow. That’s so charitable of them.
On the whole, Apple treats its employees well.

A more cynical (but eminently logical) view is that by keeping potentially infected workers home, they’re preventing their entire staff from being infected, too. (As an American living in Europe, it’s curious that European employers generally take that view on staying home sick, in contrast with typical American employers who expect you at work unless you’re dead or in the hospital.)

Apple should have been cleaning those nasty, greasy, in-store devices this frequently all along
I’m a former fruit stand employee. Believe me, we were cleaning those things constantly. But when you have a Wetzel’s Pretzels kiosk a few steps outside the store, people are forever coming in with literally greasy fingers and fondling the machines. A truly Sisyphean task.

Every time i go to an apple store, stinks! anyone else experienced that smell? Is like sweat mixed with urine if i had to guess lol But good for apple doing that, Im sure is only for the salary people and not the hourly. but if it is the hourly people, kudos for Apple.
If odor is an issue, a) make sure to mention it to management, and b) ask if there’s a regional manager you can talk to, to make sure that person knows that the store manager has been trying, and so they can put pressure on the mall. (Ventilation is generally provided by the mall, not the store itself.)

Unless it is paid time off they are fostering an environment where people put others at risk because they can’t afford to take time off. Apple might give them sick leave but their landlord won’t. Nor will their student loan repayments or utilities.
Exactly as above^

It has to be paid time off otherwise sick employees will still return to work to get paid - to be able to make rent and expenses -

Wouldn't that be abuse to death though? I work for a company where I see sick notes being handed in regularly from the people who are being seen partying all night.

Apple doing the right thing and taking a leadership position in employee health managment?

Only 30 comments, most of them ill-informed.

Must be MacRumors forum!

Someone has to suffer.

It appears good, but that's about it.

Sad, isn't it. Reminds me of grade school with a couple kids sitting in the back of the classroom, squirming in their seats, right arm raised and flapping, left hand over mouth, wanting to correct the teacher. Ommm...you didn't say "paid!"

You are incorrect on both accounts

Sweet!!!

So basically if I have a lingering post-viral cough or am feeling a little bit tired, I can be off for 6 months?
It is exactly this attitude that will cause companies to be LESS accommodating in these situations down the road.

its never been a worse time to be a retail employee
Yeah I'm glad I don't work retail anymore, but...I traded retail for hospital 😂 And my hospital was treating a coronavirus patient last week.

Because it doesn’t say ‘paid sick leave’.

Than why not say it’s paid. If you’re going to issue a statement that you are doing the right thing than make it clear that these people are being take care of. Their standing policy requires employees ‘prove’ they were sick by getting a note from a doctor. That doesn’t smell like they typically pay people when they miss work.

Image what would happen if people could file disability if they got sick at work. After all, the policy requires you to be sick before you can get the day off.

I worked for Apple for over five years and never had to prove I was sick or provide any note.

Yes and whether or not paid, how will they stop abuse of it if you don't even need a doctor's note?

What an incredibly wrong take.
But it still brings up the point of how will they stop abuse?
[automerge]1583869817[/automerge]
Yes I guess you can. But thats the problems with people nowadays they think like you.Always trying to get a free ride in life. A company tries to help employees then someone with your kind of thinking has to take advantage of the situation.
I doubt they are going to do that, but sure as heck people will. How will they police it?

Yea notes is such a worthless policy. If you have bad digestive issues, going to the doctor could be useless other than to get the note, and it could cost more than you get paid. And then the true fakers will just get one forged.

Exactly. Every good policy I think I've ever seen at work or otherwise is ruined by the fraudsters.

If you hire good employees and have a policy that expects honesty, having many rules becomes unnecessary. Violations are addressed on an individual basis, rather than by instituting yet another new policy.

In this universe, in United States, sick leave is paid. And so is vacation leaves, paternity leaves and all other forms of leaves. Unpaid leave is referred to as "Loss of Pay leaves", or "Leaves without pay". I am not sure about parallel universes.

Your attitude is unnecessary, albeit funny, as in the US 80% (as in 40 different states) do not mandate paid sick leave.

As this is in addition to standard sick time it reasable that this not be required to be paid, especially if sick time has been used up or not yet accumulated, in the ten states that require it.
