Apple is extending the amount of time that customers have to purchase or subscribe to its AppleCare+ after an initial device purchase, reports Bloomberg.

Right now, customers have 60 days after buying a device to sign up for AppleCare+, but that's extending to up to one year for some device purchases in the United States and Canada.

Bloomberg does not specify whether this applies to all AppleCare+ plans or just plans designed for the iPhone. Apple's own support documents on AppleCare+ have not yet been updated.

Apple shared the news about the AppleCare+ extension with retail staff and customer support employees this morning, explaining that the change gives customers "another opportunity to protect their device and have access to all the AppleCare+ benefits."

The extended AppleCare+ purchase option is available for customers who pay for AppleCare+ in full or for those who subscribe via installments on the Apple Card credit card. Those who want to upgrade to AppleCare+ after having a device for some time will need to have their devices screened by a retail employee to check for damage prior to purchase.

Bloomberg speculates that amid slowing AppleCare sales due to the pandemic, providing customers with more time to buy AppleCare+ could increase AppleCare+ sales and boost Apple's services revenue.

When does the two years of coverage start? From device purchase date or coverage purchase date? Hoping the latter.
It’ll start with purchase/activation date. Makes sense the device will need to be inspected before purchasing of AC+, but there was already too much friction with Apple stores before the pandemic. Scheduling an appointment to get your phone inspected? Not many will go for that, imho.

I think a caveat here is you could do the monthly plan, which makes the 2 year period irrelevant. I believe the monthly plan actually never runs out as long as you keep paying, which is helpful for folks that want to keep the device covered for beyond the 2 year span.

Good and finally. Back in the day when I was in retail, attachment rates mattered a lot but I'd always tell customers they have a year to add coverage which is true but they'd have to accept that their 90 day phone support may expire but hardware was covered 12 months. iOS devices don't follow that method you have a year of coverage but AppleCare+ (aka accidental damage) for 2 years had to be attached at time of sale or within 60 days (with an inspection of the device which initially you had to go to an Apple store and have them inspect before you could attach). I'm glad it's back to 1 year across the lineup.

Correct. The monthly plan just keeps charging you monthly until you cancel.

The monthly plan is nice after the two-year is over. I had it for my iPhone 8 Plus after the period was over, but my model was the minimum requirement. Other issue, you have to sign up within 30 days of your 2-year expiring.

That used to be the policy for the original AppleCare.

Good move, opportunity for Apple to make money and good for consumers. This will also help 2nd hand market because there are tons of 6 month old iPhones that go for sale on used market but no AppleCare + on the device kills it for most.

pretty good deal. especially if you're not sure if you're going to keep the device for more than 1 year.

Nice. I usually wait at least 45 days or so to buy Applecare just so I don't have two high-dollar transactions on one credit card bill.

This is correct, regarding the start date. It is the activation date of the AppleCare+.
