The best choice for GPS would be to buy a real GPS. Magellan models are available for as little as $75 at Best Buy, and can be used in pedestrian, car, and marine mode. They have maps for the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, so you don't have to worry about pre-loading anything. It's 5x3 inches, and fits in a pocket, purse, etc. I have a Samsung tablet with GPS, and it will show my location on a pre-loaded map. That's something, but not much. The Magellan will give real coordinates in then event of an emergency, and directions to wherever I'm going. It also features points of interest (Hey! Where's the nearest gas station?), and wifi tablets just can't do that without an Internet connection.

I drive a lot, so a tablet GPS just isn't something I need, as it's the wrong tool for that job. We sail, so I have a few really nice pocketable marine GPS units, that also have a road function as well.

Best GPS is my Note 2 while in the car. Much quicker to find POI's within Google maps and the screen is big but still portable to fit in phone holders. And you don't sit there typing out the address; you point, click and navigate. But the Amoled screen does not work well in direct sunlight while riding my motorcycle. Even my standalone GPS sucks in direct sunlight. The Nexus 7/Nexus 7 2013 has no problems displaying in bright conditions. Standalone GPS units are dead. Either smartphones are killing them or small tablets are. If you don't own a smartphone than yes; gps units work fine.

Most people I know use their smart phone for GPS, but I don't own one. My wife and I have considered buying one several times, but never get around to it.

I was looking at a Tesla sedan, and that car has a 17" monitor that can display GPS, the Internet, etc. Now THAT'S a tablet of epic proportions! It wouldn't look cool on you bike, however. ;) The Tesla uses Google maps.
