IF we're talking pure hardware, which Apple's complaint is based on, there are MANY Android tablets with better specs than the iPad 2.
The Galaxy 10.1 is one of the front-runners, but even the Motorola Xoom has better specs than an iPad 2.

The only thing Apple has as an advantage right now is the software, and Android is very quickly overtaking them in terms of software innovation.

Patents or design exclusives having little or nothing to do with specs. Specs also have nothing at all to do with how good a tablet is or how successful it will be.

what is apple pissed about. android software likeness of ios or the actual hardware design. it seems as if this likeness could have been pretty much aimed at anybody. almost all tablets pretty much look the same and many of them use android which is also very similar. what do they want to do sue everyone that competes with them.

Only the ones that copy them.

I wish specs matter as much as you think they do.

Android on tablets so far is way behind iOS.

The tablet market is nothing like the smartphone market. In fact, we're seeing the *real* worth of Android on tablets. Nothing to write home about, so far.

Maybe when Apple's competitors actually manage to sell these things and cut down on the copying we'll be a little more impressed.

Go back to the late 19th century and Charles Dickens was ripping on the Americans who bought obvious copies of his works (only the names of the characters would change).

Georges Melies' seminal work "Le Voyage dans la lune" (the film with the iconic image of the Rocket lodged in the eye of the "man in the moon") was unashamedly stolen by American film technicians, who were employed by Thomas Edison, an American patent hero.
Melies didn't receive a cent from the amazingly popular and unauthorised US release, and died a poor man.

Death to patents. Give me a free market and not this poor excuse for an aristocracy of pull based mixed economy. Patents crush competition and innovation.
Worst idea ever.

Patent's are supposed to INFLUENCE innovation and protect ideas from being just stolen and sold by someone who didn't invent the product. No one sees it, but Apple is trying to influence innovation as well. They wouldn't be suing if these companies were coming up with their own ideas.

Apple is right in many of their lawsuits. Maybe they go a bit overboard sometimes, but they are passionate individuals.

As much as fandroids and Apple haters want to think that Apple is just trying to burn off all of it's competition because they are "scared" or "can't compete", Apple is just trying to protect it's ideas, and in the case of the Nortel patents, protect itself from being sued by other companies (notice that no lawsuits have come from the Nortel patents). Also notice how Apple out competed all of it's competition even prior to these patent suits. Apple is definitely not scared of any company. Just because Android has the market share doesn't change the fact that Apple could practically BUY Google. Drop that 76 Billion in their stock and they would practically have the controlling stake in the company.

As has been said many times, you wouldn't be too happy if you were say....an artist, and someone took your painting, copied it exactly and sold it as their own work.

You'd be pissed. You'd be contacting your copyright lawyer.

It's the same principle. It shouldn't be different just because it's with industrial design.

Overtaking them in terms of software innovation? Google called, they want their paid forum poster back.

And so it starts. Time for these Asian companies to come up with their own designs.

Agreed. Samsung was on Mars to think they had a position. At least HTC is smart enough to offer dialog. Although I'm certain Apple will castrate them as well.

HTC, Samsung, Motorola. The world as you knew it is over.

Android will now begin to die.

"The Assimilation Continues". :apple:

It was announced in February, they gave away 5000 of them at Google I/O in May, US release was in June.
If there was a delay of any kind, this is the first I've heard of it.

I may have mis-remembered. I recalled this article. No delays, but did they tweak stuff to get it more competitive? Which was sort of my point when some were claiming Apple was the one trying to catch up. Anyway. I've obfuscated too much at this point. :p

It's not the same principle. Copyright is not patenting. Again I will link this here. I'm assuming (hoping) everyone knows who Mark Cuban is.

I don't own any Android devices, I dont even use gmail.

I do know that Android has had two point releases (3.1 and 3.2) since Apple announced iOS 5, and Ice Cream Sandwich is likely to come out the same time as iOS 5.
That kind of development speed means they're going to blaze past Apple pretty soon.

Name one Asian company that made something truly innovative on their own! They steal and cheat and rip off the Americans every day.

Personally I am happy the Asian companies don't copy our cars. I need something which is reliable and gets decent mileage.

It depends. Honeycomb in its current updated state is amazing and great to use. The Native apps are on par if not better than some of the apple offerings. The biggest differentiation is that the ipad has crazy mad app support which makes it the better tablet. (reason why im getting one) I wont get a android tablet until summer next year when the app support is better.

<snip>

Yes, Apple changed the market. We all know that. So did Henry Ford - yet, we still allow people to make cars with 4 wheels, doors and a steering wheel. One must have an Apple far up ones ass not to understand how silly some of you look on a daily basis on this board.

<snip>

Not to nitpick but Ford didn't come up with an automobile user interface that we all use today. Despite being a top seller, his Model T was considerably more complicated to drive than cars we currently drive.

How many ways can one make a 10.1 Tablet?

The Galaxy 10.1 is rectangle, the Ipad is square
10.1 has zero bezel buttons(all soft keys), Ipad has one
ONe tab has a samsung label on it, the other an apple label on it
10.1 is running Honeycomb, Ipad running iOS
10.1 is thinner than the Ipad 2
10.1 has a higher screen resolution than the iPad 2
10.1 is lighter than the Ipad 2
10.1 has a plastic back that is either white or gray, ipad is aluminum
10.1 has better Cameras on front and back and they look different and are in different locations than the ipad 2

Where are the similarities?

i have the same exact question!!!

it's interesting that so far no one has quoted the post above and argued against it.

steve says jump, world says "how high", not "why?"

*sigh*

"Development speed" is absolutely no bearing on quality, innovation or, well, pretty much anything.

Plus, add on top of that that a point release could include almost nothing of consequence, and you're pretty much talking about nothing really quickly.

As a proud owner of the old iPad (sold it right when they announced the new one, got good $ for it) and now iPad 2, I really don't see why Apple would stop this. It looks and performs nothing like an iPad.

if apple had a strong case against NOkia, do you think apple would have "settled outside" court?

I think not.

a loss to Nokia would have been a major PR loss for apple and damaged reputation. so they've settled "outside" the court. heck, apple has more money than us gov't.
