Apple's smartphone sales increased 1.3 percent year-over-year in the United States during the first quarter of 2026, according to data shared by Counterpoint Research. Apple saw a sales increase while the broader U.S. smartphone market experienced a 5.7 percent decline during the same time period.

Android device sales declined 14.4 percent, while Apple's market share grew 4 percent year-over-year. iPhone 17 performance is part of the reason Apple outperformed the market, but Counterpoint says the company was also helped by a later launch of Samsung's Galaxy S26 series in March.

Apple's market share increased at all three major U.S. carriers, while Android saw a decline. The iPhone made up 75 percent of sales at Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, while Android devices made up 25 percent.

Counterpoint expects Apple to continue to draw users to iOS because it maintained pricing with the iPhone 17e and even increased storage, while smartphone makers with slimmer hardware margins have had to raise prices.
If Apple can avoid significant price increases and continue to outpace its peers in promotional dollars, it will be tough for Android OEMs to keep up in the year ahead.
During Apple's April 30 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the iPhone 17 family was the most popular lineup in Apple's history. Cook said information from IDC indicated Apple gained market share during the quarter.

Cook also said iPhone demand was off the charts, leading to supply constraints during the quarter. Apple was having trouble getting the A19 and A19 Pro chips manufactured by TSMC due to demand for TSMC's AI server chips.

According to Cook, memory shortages and rising costs will have more of an impact on Apple later in 2026. Apple is expecting "significantly higher" memory costs and plans to look at a "range of options" for mitigation. Cook declined to provide insight into how Apple plans to deal with the problem, and he did not comment on whether Apple will raise prices.

My iPhone 13 mini was the low end device that model year. I still have it because of the actual SIM card slot which is necessary in many parts of the world that do not offer eSIMS (not even in their vocabulary). Just loaded iOS 26.5 and it runs. It has two cameras whereas the iPhone 17 Air has just one camera.

The iPhone 13 mini may get two more iOS versions before Apple stops support. By then, my interest in travel may be over for the less up to date places in the world.

It's interesting to me that the mobile phone market ended up much like the PC market: a duopoly. With PCs it was Mac vs. Windows. With phones it's iOS vs. Android. There really aren't any other major players. Windows Phone, Blackberry, Palm ... all gone. Maybe that's because Apple nailed the execution with the iPhone. Android basically became the Windows of phones: a very similar interface to Apple's but a more open system.

Everyone bought an iPhone 17 because of all the rumors of a downgraded iPhone 18

and to get ahead of possible price increases

Linear time would like a word. The 17 has been selling well since it was released in September. The stories you linked to are from 3 weeks ago at most.

Oh, and the number of people who make their buying decisions based on what they hear from Apple rumor sites like this would add up to a rounding error in iPhone sales.

I wouldn’t have bothered with a 17 pro max if my carrier didn’t buy my 14 pro max for 1100. Amortized, but I wouldn’t get anywhere close upfront.

when I can install apps like SmartTube, or sideload apps not approved by tim Apple, proper browsers with their engines, not safari wrappers and have proper access to the filesystem, I would get an iPhone, meanwhile, I will stay with an Android phone.

Even tough, I already have a Mac and an iPad.

Really nice! Shows what customers actually want, and it's not AI, it's good value.

Ironic that it is Apple who caught the whole industry off guard, being greedy, when they introduced the iPhone 17 — A premium smartphone, from a premium brand, at a lower price.

Apple is doing absolutely fine without wasting billions on "AI" because they concentrate on what matters, building useful tools.

Meanwhile, have you seen the what Google is doing with Android 17? Disaster.

So Apple knows the 17 was the best selling iphone by a country mile...

"So let's gimp the 18 model..."

Sincerely hoping the rumours of a dimmer screen and other aspects dont amount to anything.

iPhones have a better value proposition

Most comparable Samsung and Google pixel phones have the same starting price, but Apple typically uses much better hardware
I have no complaints about the hardware, but I can tell you straight up the software is beneath Android in terms of smoothness right now (flagship comparisons).

The good news is that software can be fixed.
