The only people who know about updates, whether software or hardware, are the people directly working on said software or hardware.
Further, most of these people only know about the particular part their working on. For example, they developers who revamped Finder have no idea when the official leopard release date is only how close Finders virtual folders are to being stable (if that's what their working on).
Apple has an ingrained secrecy culture. Even every bug report is tagged for clearance levels where only people of that clearance and higher can read it. For example, if a developer submits a bug report and someone higher then he posts a comment to that bug report the reports level is raised such that even submitter can no longer read it.
Short version: There are very few people at apple that actually know the whole picture... including release dates.

And forget the newbie crap, I've been round here for a while waiting for a damn mac pro update just like the rest of you I just never felt the need to post because I figured all you computer savy tech men would get the scoop before me. Like I said, just relaying the information.

I think the Apple guy's meaning behind Mac Pro wasn't directed towards a computer.
