Well my girl doesn't know **** about computers. What makes me think it could be true is that she was there to get a mac book, and he told her that the mac book pro was recently updated within the last few weeks and that she could hold off for the new mac pro coming out within "two to three weeks". She then asked him how much would it cost and he said without hesitation "$3349". Which is a pretty serious price jump but it wouldn't suprise me these days. He basically told her not to buy a computer. Interesting that his mention of that (the update, not the price) coincides pretty much with what everyone has been yapping about on here.

Whatever, If I were you guys I wouldn't believe me either. But this did happen and I figured I would pass it along. Should have realized how sour everyone is about waiting sooooo long to get their new mac pros to hunker down in front of. (as am I)

I'm going to go now too much negative energy with the mac folk these days but I'll check back in when they announce that they are $3300 and coming out within two to three weeks, and If I'm wrong I will still come back so you all can flame me. And lighten up people, you will get your ****ing mac pro one of these days.

The guy working at the Apple Store in the mall doesn't have any more solid info than me, you, or anyone else making rumors and speculation on the internet. Many people have been speculating for months that the updates would come in Nov shortly after intel released new CPUs so having this guy basically say "update sometime in Nov" isn't exactly ground breaking. ;)

Every time we are possibly nearing a big update/annoucment someone always has a "I heard it from a guy at the Apple Store" post. Apple is a very secretive company, obviously, so the odds of the entry level, retail employees being privy to this kind of info is pretty slim don't ya think?

You guys take this whole thing way too seriously. There will always be a better mac around the corner. Shivering your timbers in anticipation is a mug's game. If you really need a computer now, get one. Even if you wait months for the next incarnation, it will get old just as fast. The present Mac Pros are very fast and competent. They work, get the job done. There is very little software available that will make a damn bit of difference if the next version speeds up by 10 or 20%. Most people I bet will not see any difference in the speed of their work flow whatsoever. Hardware has got to the point (hard drives excepted) where it really is software that is lagging now. If your obsession is just a mindless "must have the latest technology" then I pity you. I advise that you obsess about something else, because if you actually need a fast computer, one is available now.

Cheers!

Hi, I've been following severals threads here, cause like everyone I'm waiting for the macpro update. But this thread make me confused. Could the macpros's price grow up to 3300$ ? I actually can afford the 2.200$ model, no more. But if what this guy says is true, it could make me a lil bit disappointed...

Based on the chip pricing that's been posted on a few threads, the 8-core 3.2GHz will be around that price (or a bit more probably). It's reasonable to assume, however, that there will still be model around 2.5K like now.

The big question (that no one other than Apple can answer) is how many models will be in the new lineup.

Hope you're right. I don't even imagine pay more than 2000€ for a computer (2500€ macpro + my -20% ADC discount). Moreover, 8 cores would be useless to me, so...

The main issue people have with the Mac Pro is that the entry level price is too high. Some people, like me, do need the expandability of the Mac Pro, but do not really need all that power.
The new Intel Penryn-CPU's come in all speeds and prices, even cheaper than the 2.0GHz currently in the $2200,- model. I wouldn't be surprised if there finally came a sub $2k model sporting a low-end Penryn-CPU.

And no, I do not know this for sure, even though I actually work at an Apple Retail Store (be it not in the U.S.).

Maybe the Apple Store sales guy is right, the next Mac Pro will have octo core Penryns, will sell for $3300, and be called the Mac Pro Max. He neglected to mention that Apple will introduce a mid-range tower with quad core Penryns that wil go for $1799. It'll be called the Mac Pro Lite.

In general I agree with this sentiment but not now (I can't get my Mac Pro until next year anyway, but I wouldn't advise anyone to get them now). The Mac Pro upgrade is imminent, and when it comes it's likely to be a considerable hardware bump for the same or less money. It's highly likely all Mac Pros will be Quad Core for the base, which is a ton right there. Not to mention just general componentry upgrade.

If you need it, then you need it and have to get it now, but in general, right now is a horrible time to buy a new Mac Pro.

They lowered the prices on iMacs and gave more so why not the same for powerMac.

Apocryphal! anyone connected well enough to know will not have a girl friend nor the ability to talk to women in general.

I'd say that's a bit of a generalization that's over the line.

To the OP: Apple is well known for its super-secrecy, I don't know how it works but I do know that it is among the tightest lipped businesses that exist primarily because of sites like this. The truth is that apple employees are NEVER told about products until the day they arrive in the store (typically the day before they are launched) because so many of them would tell the people here what was happening and any planned announcement by apple would be ruined. So the employee was likely telling your girlfriend what he thought was going to happen but not what he knew was going to happen. Hope that helps.

As of November 12th, Woodcrest and Clovertown will not be worth the price Apple is selling them for. I can see Apple making the switch next week. Who wants to spend the money on a 4-Core machine when you can get an 8-Core for the same price? ... I do a lot of encoding and I would definitely see a speed increase from the current MacPro that is out.

When you step back and think about a possible release as a rational business decision, then the quoted theory gives the 13th rumor more clout.

Apple generally does not drop prices during upgrades, they merely keep things around the same price, but deliver better hardware... generally (always exceptions).

I picked up my first three wives by lying to them about when Mac Pro updates would be coming out. Nothing gets a girl hotter than a little hardware rumor-mongering...
I got sucked into desenso's web of hardware lies. Now I'm a divorcee.

Calm down Jersey. Respresent this. Your story is probably bs, your rumor is possibly true but all that is easy to assume because the price of the hardware should be around $3k. It's easy to say something was said if you just troll the forums enough. I can put together many theories. I will say though that if she were in there buy a mac book pro, a portable computer then why would he even bother recommending a desktop? Seems kind of odd to me. That would be a first that I've heard where an Apple retail employee (aka teenager with no knowledge of updates) decided a mac book pro could be sold that night but why bother when he could sell her a desktop in 2-3 weeks? I just can't see the logic in that. Again Jersey, your story sounds silly but the rumor is just the same rumor we've all read around here and other sites so really it's not all that new. And people will jump on you for nothing around here, seems to be the nature of the internet beast. Just keep representing with your Jersey bad self.
:)

Krunk, you've been watching too many top secret government spy movies, its Apple, not NATO's Top Secret Nuclear Silo Classified Security Alliance.

Nah, I just know folks that work at apple as developers. That bug escalation policy is one of their biggest gripes. Everything really does work under a "need to know" policy.

So wait, your GF went in to an Apple Store to buy a Macbook, and the guy there told her not to buy one because new Mac Pros are coming in a few weeks?

Methinks you need a better story.

Rumors

Has anyone ever been in an apple store when a rumor filled customer comes in talking about future products and time lines? It is hella annoying, the apple guy's are always telling them the same thing and getting annoyed at the repetition of this act. Some apple store employees don't even know how to take a screen shot, so i take anything they tell me with a grain of salt.

You guys are crazy. I wouldn't doubt that this guy at the apple store doesn't know jack about the new update. He is probably a clown that was trying to be cool. Nontheless it still happened and I was just reporting back to you guys what she was told. I wasn't aware that everytime a new update is on the horizon that someone pulls out the ol I talked to a guy at the mac store bit, but take it for what it is but when they do happen to come out and they are in fact $3349 I think that would be pretty funny

oh, and you heard it here first :)

Now that seems logical.

You guys are crazy.
You posted something this silly as some sort of fact of new models, and we're crazy?

They do, but it won't.
