My first thought would be an IP collision. My second thought would be something outside your network is messing with you. I am assuming you are running WPA2 and you have changed your SSID and password.

Yup. Tried doing a static IP, and all that stuff as well. The only thing I haven't done is return both units. But the odds in both units having the same issue leads me to believe it's something else. I'm not really gripping about it. It is what it is. It certainly isn't going to stress me out. It's a minor inconvenience.

I've had plenty of (apple non-fixable) wifi issues with both my AppleTV 2s. They especially like to lock up my wifi so any other device can connect - but can't send/receive data until I reboot my router. Which is why I now leave them unplugged unless I am going to use them. I also have 2 chromecasts and one Roku 3 - none of those cause connection issues.

I've worked with customer service at Apple, my cable company and the maker of my router - so there ya go.

Ok... Something is clearly afoot. What brand router are you using?

as I've said earlier - both a belkin and linksys

I install iOS devices for my company in my account territory. And I have found 9 times out of 10, those with Linksys routers have constant connection issues. My brother-in-law also had a Linksys router that would constantly drop iOS devices. He replaced it with a Netgear.... Poof! The issue went away.

I don't use Belkin products much so I can't tell you too much about them. I say get a Netgear N600

My issue isn't with drop outs. That was someone else's issue.

We might get another router - but again - it's not a priority.

One Possible Solution...

I've also been experiencing streaming issues from my Mac to my Apple TV, but I managed to fix this (I think!) just last week.

A bit of Googling suggested that to fix issues with Mac to Apple TV streaming, you should try turning off the 'Share my library on my local network' option in iTunes > Preferences > Sharing. Apparently this does not affect "Home Sharing", which is something completely unrelated to "iTunes sharing".

I have no idea why this would make any difference, but since disabling this option my files are loading on the Apple TV significantly faster (almost instantly compared to several minutes previously).

Hope that helps someone! :)

It's been like this since they started the gift card offer. I've been on the fence with this offer, as this would be my first Atv. Looks like they are trying to unload inventory, so I'm hesitant to buy now to avoid buyer's remorse in a month if/when the new model is announced. But then, what if they jack up the price of the new model? Decisions, decisions...

Used ones sell for up to as much as new ones. Buy it and enjoy then sell it and get up to all of your money back. Or buy it refurbished at about $75 http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/appletv and later sell it for about $60. Then you spent only $15 to enjoy all of it's functionality between now and then. Or, rebox it and give it as a gift to someone. For $75, it's quite a GREAT gift.

I don't know why people are pretending it's not an issue in this thread.

It's called the "you're holding it wrong" rule. Basically, Apple can do no wrong so it's always someone or something else's fault when something is not working. Ignore even the facts. It's clearly user or related technology (but not Apple technology) error.

Because it's not an issue for most people. My ATV has never disconnected from our WiFi network. I've used it at two other people's homes, and it had no problems connecting and staying connected. No pretense needed; it's not an issue for me.

Sorry - I apologize

So many assumptions here ironically!

I've made an effort as in I've talked to Apple on the phone, and had two exchanges.

I haven't assumed everyone is having the same problem; I'm well aware they don't otherwise there'd be a massive recall.

The bottom line is everything in my house works flawlessly with WiFi, apart from my ATV.

It sounds like some energy saver or sleep issue.
I know thats not much help.
I know how confusing it is to do searches too because then you run into old, outdated fixes.

Agree. I have 3 ATVs on WiFi to an AEBS (802.11n 5ghz), and never have any connectivity issues with them.

Apple doesn't care about Apple TV. Same old UI for years, no new version for years

Uh, they updated the UI a few times. What does the UI not do that you want it to? You can even remove channels you don't want now, which is pretty handy.

Would be nice wouldn't it? I don't know why people are pretending it's not an issue in this thread. All of our computers are Macs (New Mac Pro, year old MBP, iMac that's about 4 years old) and not a one of them can reliably stream anything to the Apple TV. Neither can either of our iPhone 5s', or our iPad. It drops at least 5 times over the course of a 2 hour film. Streaming from Netflix is no better. At least 4-5 times in the course of one movie. It's like clockwork, you can literally guarantee it will do it and about a 5 minute range of time where it will happen. Wifi is Apple Airport Extreme, no other router. Just cable modem, and Airport. In a one floor fairly small house with absolutely no Wifi coverage issue. While everyone may not experience this issue, many (a huge number) of people do, it's a real problem. And it's frustrating that you can spend 2 and a half hours on the phone with Apple about it and in the end they just basically say "Dunno! That's just the damnedest thing".

Love Apple products obviously, but I hope this issue is remedied with the new Apple TV, or an update someday.

The reason many of us are asking about this, some of the people on this thread design hardware and software for a living. When something does not work, and we don't understand why, it bothers us. If it works for person A but not for person B, you start looking for the differences and subtracting them.

The fact that this problem has persisted across several hardware replacements tells me, it must be some kind of environmental factor. (Does it only crash or lock up when you are running the microwave? Are you running the 802.11n version of the Airport or the 802.11ac?)

What's your DHCP lease timeout on your local LAN?

When you say dropout, what do you mean? Do you mean the ATV stops streaming? Or do you mean there's no picture (i.e.: the device is dead)?

Are you using WPA2-TKIP for authentication? WPA2-TKIP is officially dead, switch to WPA2-AES.

Do you have a large metal object near your ATV, or did you coil your HDMI cable on top of your ATV? Move it and see what happens.

My guess - your router is the problem. Try borrowing a family member's or friend's router (that's a different brand/model of course). If it works, you know where the problem is.

You do know you can arrange and hide icons as you please... Just long hold select to rearrange... And use family filters to hide the stuff you don't need...

Thanks, I didn't know that.

The ui still sucks (should be organized by default, amongst other improvements) and so does the remote (including using your phone or ipad).

In the time being, I will at least organize a few things better.

I have to imagine Apple knows Apple TV is lacking when it comes to design and functionality. It's been like that since day one.

Could you explain? This is an interesting problem. I don't have ATV, but lots of streaming, regardless.

If I use my Apple TV 2 - after I'm done playing a movie (either streamed from Apple's cloud or my own iTunes from my computer - all my devices are still connected and can connect to the router - but error out when actually trying to pull any data.

It's not 100 percent of the time - but close.

So, it interferes with other devices? That's bizarre. Does turning it off fix the problem?

Have you tried it wired?

I don't care about an Apple TV update; interactivity while watching movies or television is highly overrated IMO.

I'd be happy if they would finally enable the little thing to output 24fps video. All the movie content on the iTunes store is properly encoded at 24fps, yet Apple's main device for movie playback is unable to play it back smoothly?! Weird.

Seems like a minor software upgrade would fix it, but hey, this is Apple. And the masses probably don't care about 3:2 pulldown and all that, given that many people like the 'soap video look' that the frame interpolation schemes in their televisions create. Sigh.

Now I'm curious about this, because I feel like I'm usually good at picking up weird video playback or an iffy picture in a television set up.

I've never noticed any kind of strange or different frame rate in any content on my AppleTV. I know what the "soap opera effect" looks like and that it's not very nice looking. And I also feel like I can often see the difference between PAL and NTSC frame rates.

Am I missing something? Is this only with iTunes purchased movies and shows?
Am I just... used to whatever it is that's happening?

Hopefully they'll be releasing a version that can stay connected to a WiFi network for more than 20 minutes!
Seems everybody's except yours can do this. Perhaps you should troubleshoot your network/router rather than blaming the Apple TV?

Realistically everybody would be having the same problem if it was a problem with the device. Mine has never been disconnected with the exception of router reboots.

Mine at the end only lasted 30 secs before losing connection, take it to the apple store and get a free replacement even if you are out of warranty since they have admitted the issue. My aTV3 replacement works flawlessly

A new Apple TV should have notifications and notification center.

I care more for an app store in my aTV3… what can you do w. the notifications anyways, if you want to reply you have to pick up the phone or waste 1 min to write a 6 word msj w the remote. I can see it good for answering or denying a call, reading a text etc, just prefer the app store first.

A new Apple TV should have notifications and notification center.

Only if they can be turned off. Better yet, only if they are turned off by default. Who wants to be in the middle of a movie, then have some CNN notification pop up telling you, some random celebrity you don't care about got arrested for shoplifting while drunk.

Your TV may be doing a better job of converting frame rates than you think. Pixel lag may be covering some of it up. (Just some guesses.)
