I bought an iMac G4 off eBay this week and tested it when I received it at my office - all seemed fine, I was able to upgrade from the 10.3 install it came with to 10.4 no problem, then took it home and by the time I got it set up in my house it just started constantly beachballing (seems tied to I/O but not sure).

I think the hard drive is failing but can't be 100% sure. If I boot from my 10.4 install media, it hangs at the "Preparing installation..." screen, but on a rare good boot I was able to run Verify Disk in Disk Utility before the whole thing came crashing to a halt again, but it seemed to be okay based on that output.

Ideally I don't want to have to turn this into some nightmare hellmess of swapping in and out components, but I can't find an iso for AHT for this model. Does anyone know of a place or perhaps another model's disc that works? Other than that I plan to crack it open and see if it's full of dust cause that might be a factor I guess....

Thanks!

Seems like that one works - it passed the quick test! Although, I just reseated the RAM in the user slot before trying this and it seemed to be stable enough to actually burn that .dmg (tried to burn it on my Linux machine but that really did not go well at all) so I think that might have been the issue, must've gotten jostled in transit.
