This seems like a perfect technology fit for adding background video (and images) to Animoji. The results should be sick!

Indeed, that would make me feel sick. I wish more attention was paid to bringing out computers with innovative tech rather than endlessly refining the iToys and playing with childish nonsense like animojis.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you have a lifetime of disappointment ahead of you. They will at some point put out a Mac Pro hope you have at least $6,000 saved up. All the animoji and that type of stuff is good for getting kids into the ecosystem and are wildly popular with Asians.

What you really seem to want is Apple to cater to your specific whims whether it makes sense for them to do so or not. What do you want in a new computer? Faster processor, better display, nicer keyboard? Remember you are on a rumors board of a company whose boss envisions the post PC era. If you want to become depressed watch the commercials of that smug little nerd girl asking "What's a computer?'

The tech already exists to make fake yet highly convincing photos, videos and audio of famous figureheads.

The lines are blurred from reality to virtual. Many don’t have the attention span to pick out the illusion and it’s becoming ever so challenging. Only our true selves know, unless we convince ourselves otherwise.

I know but now every d...head will be able to do it right in the phone.

Great, now even easier to produce fake photos and videos. Lots of bad things can happen when trust is lost. A video or picture was the cornerstone of our justice system. Both for and against the defendant. Now, so easy to manipulate this cornerstone, game changer.

Smug little nerd girl? I think you’ve read a lot into that scene where a little girl is confused because an older neighbor woman doesn’t know what to call an iPad. Sure it’s a computer, but people call it an iPad, not a computer or PC or notebook or whatever. If the neighbor had called it a Surface, the kid would’ve said, “what’s a Surface?”.

Like it or not, the iPad can/does replace a notebook or desktop for many people. Have you seen the sales data since the iPad launched? There’s nothing depressing about it, technology marches on. When they’re our age, our children will be using devices that haven’t even been invented yet.

I assume this will be incorporated into Final Cut Pro as well.

I hope this image used to illustrate this technology isn't the best example they could come up with! Looks silly to me. The scale is way off, no shadows, and she looks just like a cutout I could do better than this in Photoshop, for only 6 bucks a month, way off from 30 mill.

Sounds like a Fire Sale ! ... they're NOT selling @ ONLY $30M USD unless they need to, OR are forced to, especially if they truly Rx'd $3.3M in VC funding !

If they truly had something, it would be in the $300M to $3B USD range !

You're going to be very upset when you learn this wasn't real, then...

I wish Apple would acquire a company that makes desktop computers.

This type of thinking led to News Corp buying Myspace for $580M and then selling it for $35M 6 years later.

Apple has acquired Danish computer vision startup Spektral, according to a paywalled report from Danish newspaper Børsen.

spektral-apple.jpg

Spektral has developed a technology that can intelligently separate people and objects from their original backgrounds in photos and videos, and overlay a new background, resulting in what is called a "cutout." The solution is driven by deep neural networks and spectral graph theory.

The technology can be thought of as real-time "green screen" processing powered by machine learning algorithms:The report says Apple acquired Spektral, formerly known as CloudCutout, in late 2017. Spektral co-founders Henrik Paltoft and Toke Jansen, who now lists himself as a manager of computational imaging at Apple, are said to have received 200 million Danish krone, or roughly $30 million as of today's exchange rate.

Spektral's website notes that its solution makes it possible to create unique and immersive mixed reality content. Apple could incorporate the technology into the default Camera app on iPhone, or Messages, or Clips, or use the technology in bigger ways as it continues to push into augmented reality.

Spektral was founded in 2014 and raised $3.3 million in venture capital prior to its acquisition by Apple, according to Crunchbase.

Not true...crushed! My point, yes fakes have been made on million dollar budgets. Now $50 bucks and anyone can make a real life movie or fake photo. :(

I don't care. I was responding to somebody who was crying about Apple not paying attention to computers. He was saying animoji aren't important and I as actually implying that they are actually important and that in fact computers are not as important to Apple's business. You may want to reread what was said. Oh and yes the little girl comes off as a smug little brat in the commercial and I am not the only one that thought it was cringe worthy.

30 mil that’s it? That’s a steal

The article does not mention how much Apple paid for it, it says "Spektral co-founders Henrik Paltoft and Toke Jansen got 30 Million", later on in the article it says "Spektral was founded in 2014 and raised $3.3 million in venture capital" so I guess there were investors.
The exact amount is unknown.
