The smartphone market was not dead. The 2006 smartphones were for business people only. Then came Apple and got into the phone market, the mass market the normal people were.

The car market is a mass market already. Its not like Apple can make a flying car and everybody will be like "Hey I will ditch my old world car and buy a new Apple car every two years!"

QNX is a very very old operating system. Of course in this case Apple will be developing something entirely new but QNX has been one of the more respected realtime operating systems out there.

So too is two and a dozen is just another number like twelve. As for the editorial teams feelings I really doubt that you have a grasp on what they are feeling. Beyond that MacRumors apparently has at least some standards when it comes to editorial quality and article readability - at least compared to the competition.

There is no evidence what so ever that self driving cars are inherently safer. It is already pretty obvious that they can screw up as easily as a human operator. Beyond that i'm not convinced of viability in anything other than optimal conditions, I wouldn't have any faith whatsoever isn a self driving car handling driving in a snow storm.

Occupant safety will not go down the drain just because there is a computer in the car.

In a few years, people will be designing their own cars and 3D printing them.

Not unless you are rich enough to buy the hardware required to print a car. That is a lot of capital and frankly it would be a tough business to offer to consumers. Mainly because we have a long ways to go before 3D printing is cost effective against other manufacturing methods.

That being said there are niches where 3D printing is already finding its way into the hotrod industry so one day maybe.

That will never happen. For one the government will be involved and even is by chance Apple tried to offer downloads you would have regulators trying to ban it. Just like they are trying to ban performance software right now. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised to see validation requirements as stringent as the medial industry suffers through.

Validation and frankly the liability that comes with this sort of software is something Apple isn't familiar with. It is a massive undertaking to prove an operating system and to validate installation for each platform it is installed upon. Further is Apple makes a mistake (just a single one) the ambulance chasers will be all over them like flies on sh3t. There is a lot of talk in these forums about lawyers going after Apple for all sorts of silly things but the automobile industry has an even longer and ongoing history of having every little mistake exposed to the world through the courts.

As long as there is one car left on the road that is human driven and can crash into you your car will need bumpers and seat belts too. So yeah your dream will just stay a dream.

You remind me of the magazines from the fifties where people thought we will have nuclear powered planes and flying cars by the seventies! LOL

You don't get a much simpler vehicle than a train, yet we can't automate those, so we will never automate cars either. Hope this is just a rumour. An electric car would be a much better investment.

I don't live in America. Yes of course there are automated trains and they are becoming more common but they are not the majority by a long way. All automated trains run on tracks made inaccessible to outsiders and constantly monitored for obstacles. That is impossible for roads.

How do automated cars pass the ethics test? If someone is killed by automated car, who is at fault? And how does a programmer design the software to avoid a collision? Drive off the road? Kill the inhabitants or kill the kid who ran onto the road ? Will all road have to be fenced off? Never going to happen.

He is still right. Trains, planes and ships will never be self driven. Not in your, my or my kids lifetime. Period. The handful of self driven subways and light rail trains don't count. They have guarded and separated, fenced, elevated or underground tracks that can't be blocked or crossed. There will never be a self driving regular train. There is just too much that can go wrong.

There's plenty of automated LRTs that run right on the same street and enter/exit the same intersections as cars. Fully automated. Anyways, his original point, the one I originally responded two, unequivocally stated trains will never be automated. And I clearly showed they are, which he conceded in his response. You can't change your point after someone has already responded to you to include fences, separations, etc. without conceding part of your argument.
