iOS controller or not, it seems that Apple may indeed have met some devs at GDC, if we were to believe this:

Phil Fish (creator of FEZ) posted a cryptic tweet three days ago about a meeting with Apple, which I thought was weird since I don't think that Apple was officially at GDC.

Note: Phil Fish is a little weird so I'm not sure what to think of it.

Maybe they're trying to get some mac gaming momentum, or maybe some advancements in iOS gaming?

Yes. I'm not sure if you're new to the ballgame here, but Apple regularly "leaks" information to trusted journalists. Walt Mossberg, David Pogue, and a few others are seeded these little nuggets of info to get the excitement rolling.

To the masses, Apple has an image of secrecy. To anyone that follows closely, they are actually quite loose with details when they want to be. It is all part of the PR/Marketing game.

Yeah, I'm aware of Apple's shenanigans. I know that there are intentional leaks, I just didn't think the journalists would be the ones to do that.

They already have game controllers...

The iPad... The iPhone... and the iPod...

Think 2013 and beyond people...

;)

Not sure why anyone would buy into this anyway. Apple has always said that the iPhone is about touch... releasing a game controller not only reverses their trends, but it also complicates things by adding apps into the App Store that require an accessory.

Apple will never do this.

Your logic is sound!

But I'm not convinced it applies equally forever: the iOS touch gaming market is now mature and huge and can tolerate more variety. And Apple softened on game controllers a year or two ago: it wasn't always allowable to mention them in app descriptions, and now it is.

That said, if it ever happened, I would definitely expect Apple to require that games be playable without the controller.

(Also, AppleTV is another matter: there IS no games market for it yet, so the rules are yet to be written on that possibility.)

They are the only ones likely to do it. Feeding little bits to journalists helps keep them on your side.

I'm thinking this. There are tons and tons of apps in the App Store that work better with a keyboard or a stylus, but still have an option for touch if you don't have either one of these things.

A gamepad could follow the same example. Developers still have to have good touchscreen controls to pass muster, but can also include support for Apple's official controller alongside it.

"Nope" might mean no to a physical controller, but yes to a software based controller (on iPod touch/iPhone/iPad) in conjunction with Apple TV gaming apps....??

I don't think even Apple would produce something so incredibly impractical. I mean without any tactile feedback you'd be constantly looking down to reorient your thumbs to the controls.

Something Apple DOESN"T have plans for? Snow in late March? Republicans making sense? The world just might be ending!!!:eek::eek::eek:

Good. Gaming consoles aren't Apple's business or what their products are about. They should leave it to third party companies to expand accessories available for iOS devices.

smartphone and tablet gaming sucks.. we need a controller... i have a massive amounts of games.. and they are freaking bad because touch controls isn't reliable..

Angry birds and Fruit ninja works for touch.. but actual games like FPS and GTA are lame and not fun to play on iOS devices.

A shame.

An officially supported controller, even if not from Apple themselves, could do wonders for taking iOS devices from being great casual/touch-focused gaming devices to serious rivals for many of the large multi-platform releases.

As it is, it's somewhat hobbled by being touch-only or a patchy list of devs trying to support numerous attempts at physical controls that aren't really worthwhile until one gains enough users to be worth developers' time…

I feel like Apple have have never really got games or gamers, and what success they do have on iOS is despite of them rather than because of them.

I agree with those saying Apple should/could require touch controls as the baseline minimum, whilst still doing more to support physical solutions. It's like one line in an updated app store agreement for devs, and bundling support for a (what would be a presumably very grateful and enthusiastic) partner of their choice for an officially-sanctioned 'made for iOS' bluetooth controller.

I would never believe anything this guy says strictly because of his beard.

Edit: Macrumors I'm sorry but 'Apple Has No Plans for Dedicated iOS Gaming Controller' is indeed the most ridiculous statement based on no real evidence I have ever heard haha. I don't care how accurate this guy is, he doesn't get information from Tim Cook, and thus he has no idea, also you can't draw the conclusion that they have 'No Plans' based on this even if the 'Nope' were accurate.

Not particularly. Complicated by the lack of any good software support and licensing for the Lightning connector. Both of which suck.

The people at Apple make products that they personally would want to use. They're not successful people because they play video games. No way is Apple coming out with a game controller.

Then get an ION controller, Jeez

Although I'd be surprised if Apple made a 1st party game controller, I don't see how this official 'no' from Apple is any more binding than when Jobs said things like Apple has no plans to make a tablet, no plans to have video support on iPods and that nobody reads anymore so Amazon's Kindle is doomed.

Just saying didn't Steve Jobs say to the journalists that Apple had zero plans to work or start work on a tablet?

Hell I even think Apple said at one point that they would not be entering the cell phone industry due to it would require them to partner with other companies!

The desktop is where a Game controller is needed.

Yup, they won't. No matter how insanely better a physical controller would be that touch for gaming, Apple has stated they'll never make things (e.g., iOS) "complicated". After all, their target people are non-geeks (mostly women / elderly people, most geeks having been departed for Android for its OS superiority, freedom and openness).
