If the iWatch has the ability to remotely turn on the ignition of my Lexus, then I'm sold.*** (not really hard to do, because many electric/hybrid cars like the Prius can already do this)

This is just one example of how a smartwatch, a device which one would constantly be wearing on their skin, could facilitate soooo many everyday tasks. Heck, why even bother grabbing your iPhone from your pocket (or fumbling for it in your purse, backpack, manbag, waist holster), when many such tasks (e.g. remotely starting your car, or remotely turning on your home's alarm security system, etc) could be done by the flick of your wrist, the push of a single button, or a succinct verbal command directed onto your wrist.

There are certainly lots of possibilities.

*** and if someone mugs me in order to grab the iWatch from my wrist, thinking that is his ticket to stealing my car, then he would realize that HE is not able to start my car simply by barking "Siri start the engine!" The Apple iWatch should be smart enough that the voice recognition command is like a vocal password unique to its owner. It only recognizes MY voice, and only recognizes MY commands. Now that would be a device worthy of the name "smartwatch". Probably a few years away until we see this as a reliable feature.

So what is the point if it needs another iDevice to work? You shouldn't need to have another device with you to use a watch, that defeats the point.

Its a complimentary device.. all watch functions including iDevice integration.

Don't worry, if Apple should release such a device lots of posters on here will be saying how revolutionary it is!

Having a watch tell you the time and date is stupid, it'll be quicker to look at the screen.
Isn't this the point a watch - to tell you the time?

As for looking at your phone for time - many people keep it away from immediate view.

Funny that people question the usefulness of a watch to tell time!

As for a smart watch, I think the Peeble is the best shot at this product category so far, but overall still misses the mark. If I'm going to wear a smart watch, it's going to have to have some great functionality when combined to my iDevice and it's going to have to look nice too. Not like an iDevice strapped to my wrist.

Anyway... I don't think this would be a revolution in portable technology, but I do think Apple could sell a ton of these if they get it right. More than likely, I'd buy one.

This is one area where Apple will not win. People buy a Rolex, Jager le Coultre or Patek for its design and engineering, or perhaps a Richard Mille.

Not a disposable Apple product. And for others, they'll just buy a relatively inexpensive watch like a Citizen or something like that.

Or maybe you are wrong.

The Pebble smart watch is one of the biggest succes stories on Kickstarter. There is a reason for that.

Check the watch's statistics in the real world. Not very popular.

That's the criteria I apply to any product buying decision too! If everyone else hates it, I hate it. If everyone else loves it, I'm first in line to get one. I have no mind of my own, you see, I require everyone else to give me my opinions.

As long as it's not an iPod nano attached to your wrist, if it's thin and looks nice I can see this being something very interesting - I wear a watch all the time and if my watch could do other things (without being big, bulky or ugly) then what price do I pay, other than to have a bunch of teenage know-it-alls think that I'm wearing something stupid?

I think it's ridiculous all the people dismissing the idea without knowing anything (not one thing) at all about the product. I'm not saying I'm definitely buying one, but the concept is very intriguing and I'll be looking at it very closely when/if one is released.

I kind of want them focused on products that people actually want. I am not sure this watch is that big of a deal.

To paraphrase Henry Ford: "If we had asked our customers what they wanted they would have asked for a faster horse". Don't be so sure you don't want an Apple product until you see what it is. Many people were saying the iPad was useless, remember the "it's just a giant iPhone crowd", before its release.

THIS! My thoughts exactly! My girlfriend loves her iPod nano watch. My recent discovery that Tim Cook is on the Nike board complicates this matter a little bit as Nike's wearable tech would be put in direct competition with this device. Kind of reminds me how Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board during the iOS/iPhone development phase. This product also reflects Tim Cook's reputation of being a fitness guru. He's basically building a product that he's always wanted and has been inspired by Nike.

I figured this was extremely obvious when they changed the Nano design to no longer be watch-like. Wearable computing is the next big thing, and if you don't agree, then you're probably in the same group that complained about the industry moving away from physical media.

Well said.
I'm amazed at how so many people can slam a product that hasn't been released (and may not even be in development) and that has no known specs other than it's an iDevice of some sorts that is (likely) to be worn on the wrist.

Apple will make a 1.5" watch and Samsung will follow it up with a 4.5" screen watch. :p

something like this, a cross-branding with Swatch:

So you use a wind-up watch? That must be really fun.

An automatic watch doesn't require winding unless it sits unworn for more than 2 days. Wearing it keeps in wound.

Sucker born every minute. My buddy has a
PO clone for 3000$ less than you wasted.

My watch is actually worth what I paid and as time goes on will increase in value if kept in good condition. One of the great things about higher end watches.

Your buddy's fake watch is...well a fake. If you can't tell the difference good for you.

I lol at this thread.

It reminds me so much of the pre iPod thread that everyone hated. This won't revolutionize watches, it's a watch that will revolutionize phones.

Hey guys I know a lot of comments here are like “who cares, I am not interested” but what if Apple makes it a niche-thing? Like think about Nike's FuelBand with some more features around it? I am betting that Apple will definitely market it that way.. like it's something coveted for a specific set of people who are crazy about something. And after that, it's matter of more marketing about other features.

I'm going to call BS on this.

Tim Cook said Apple will only enter a field if they can greatly improve it or disrupt it. I don't see how a "curved" glass watch disrupts anything. And I can't imagine that Apple would sell that many of these.

Or could this be a device targeted strictly for fitness? A combo pedometer, GPS device, radio, and phone for exercising?

oh boy, where have you been for the past 5 years? Apple can slap their logo on a wooden slab with no function and sell a ton of them.

Far too many people here not seeing the bigger picture. Maybe that's why they are consumers, and Apple has a team of designers/innovators/marketers.

Think about it for a second. The watch industry is at a stand still. But Apple wants to create more than a watch... they are going to create an extension of your body. Anyone who is looking past this clearly forgot or does not know the success of: Pebble, Nike Fuelband+, Jawbone UP, or FitBit. Those products are not just watches-- they're sensors. They connect. They inspire.

Apple is not just going to create a wrist wrap with a screen that tells you the time. Get that out of your heads. They're going to create an experience.

Apple fanboys will be delighted. I'm ok with anything Apple is making, but I'm less happy with the fact how Apple lost it's position in the high-end segment of the market.

Since the mac-pro is outdated and not being sold in whole of Europe due the fact that Apple is refusing to make chances to it's devices to bypass European manufacturing laws can only mean that Apple will come up with a Mac Pro soon or none at all.

In any case, they, Apple, has lost ground and it's starting to go down even further simply Apple doesn't 'think different' any longer, they rather 'think quantity'.

If Apple doesn't come up with a new Mac Pro within 6 months I'll step over to PC, because those are all ready faster and cheaper machines then Apple unfortunately.

Hands Free Device

With the use of Siri, this would be the perfect device for communicating while driving. "Sire, call..." send texts using siri, etc. Vibration lets you know you have a call, answer it while driving. Siri reads directions while you drive. Many possiblities just for driving
