I have a Bose headset that that has a special cable compatible with macs/iphones so it does audio and mic. This is identical to the white ear buds that come with your iPhone.

What type of cable do you even call that? I purchased an extension for it but I lose the ability for my mac to recognize the audio input/mic.

No idea.

I tried one black one and two white ones. :)

One from Fasttech and two via eBay. Whether this is the same cable - I cannot tell.

you want to make sure it has 3 black (or white) lines going around the metal part of the plug.

if it only has 2 rings, it's just stereo audio with no mic.
1 ring, mono audio.

I'm looking for a short (4-6 inch) TRRS headphone extension cable for a iphone 5s with a charging case and a recessed headphone jack. My iphone headset is wearing out with frequent removal and reinsertion.

Looking for a reliable one as the ones on amazon seem to all have bad reviews. Saw the startech.com cables but they are 1-2meters long. Looking for a 4-6 inch one.

Thanks.

I was struggling with this same issue, only to realize that the computer only recognized the microphone if I plugged my headphones into the extension cable before plugging into the computer... which of course makes it difficult to leave the extension plugged in as part of your desk setup.
