EU now will have to make a new law...
I hope EU will understand that you cannot keep up with giant tech companies...that ship is sailed
Where do you base this? EU regulations are the sole reason for many recent changes in tech.
You can't really compare the benefit of a universal charger for *all* phones with the negligent amount of VR sets sold for many years to come...
It's about time for US to break silly taboos and regulate towards the same direction

How would you swap battery packs mid-session without having to shut down the headset? Wouldn't the headset need to have a small battery of its own?

Well, it’s not charging. It’s about how one part of the system connects to another, as I see it. But we’ll see when it comes out.

That's a super vague article articulating clickbait headline. The same thing can be said about MacBooks, they do have a propriety connector (MagSafe).

If the headline would say "Apple's new Reality Headset will use magsafe for charging" it would not result with controversial anger posts and reshares that it is currently producing now is it?
That’s how most of Gurman‘s articles imply rumors, use carefully phrased wording to increase article clickbait. Of course he is one of many that all do that.

According to Gurman, the round tip must be rotated clockwise to lock it in so that it doesn't fall out during use,
while "the cable itself connects to the battery pack, and those two pieces aren't separable.

...so, you have a trailing cable running up from your waistband to a set of goggles strapped to your head. Its permanently wired in to the battery pack* at one end and - although they've gone to the trouble of using a magnetic connector at the other, it locks in with a twist. What could possibly go wrong?!

(* because that isn't going to end up fraying...)

I don't care what they are going to use. Buying a 'mixed reality headset' is no priority of mine. Maybe when I am old and bedridden...

I wonder what the cable management will be? I can't imagine Apple would create this device, and then have a long dangling cable to your wrist/arm for a battery.

So...? What's the big deal here?
Instead of just plugging in a battery pack you already own using a usb-c cable, you will need to use an Apple made power pack that will likely cost £200+ each time it needs replacing.

And? The connector headset-battery is proprietary, but ultimately you only need USB-C to charge the headset. The iPad “charges” the MK via proprietary connector, but ultimately it’s charged via USB-C.

Proprietary just enough not to plug it in own powerbank.
What if someone is interested in buying goggles only ?
I see, its a feature.

We’ve had licensed lightning batteries for years.

Imagine paying $3000 and having to wear a battery pack around your waist. 😅 I really hope Gurman's just messing around, because if this stuff is actually true, this is going to be the most goofy-looking headset.
Or, because of the external battery, this is the first AR headset that doesn’t look/feel goofy and actually turns out useful.

External battery you say?

This is at the bottom of the list of things to be worried about for this device.
...except the whole "AR/MR as a work tool" idea is going to live and die on how practical the goggles are to use for long periods. I don't doubt that Apple can come up with impressive demos of what the tech can do - there already have been impressive demos by others (and we've all seen AR on sci-fi shows) - but if you have to mess up your hair with strappy goggles, change battery packs every 2 hours (or tether your head to the desk) its not going to fly.

I’d say it’s for safety. Cable would have some built in fuse or trip mechanism when there‘s something amiss from the battery.

you are missing my point...tech giants will always find a way ..you cannot stop "innovations" while laws are always a decade behind it
