Celebrating obesity isn't a good message, Tim Apple.

And you aren't allowed to say what I just said. You must pretend it's totally normal.

Carry on, I guess.

(you know I'm right, but you can't agree out loud, so...yeah...)

I wouldn't say it out loud in such a caustic manner since it would likely hurt some people reading it. But, I was taken aback by the ad since there's so much talk everywhere about sedentary behavior and what it does to the body. It was hard for me to see the ad and not think about that. But, it's my bias that had me conclude that the person in the ad is not active at other times. I think it's because I worry about my own sedentary behavior.

I showed the ad to my wife and daughter and they came away with completely different impressions. My daughter (close to 30) felt the ad was intentionally poking fun at overweight people, presenting them in a comical light. My wife, who exercises over an hour every day, didn't see anything negative about the depiction and only considered the consumer side of things - how great it was to order things so easily.

It's weird that three people with mostly shared values and experiences came away with such different impressions.

A couple of years ago, I introduced my (adult) daughter to one of my favorite old movies, Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail, as she somehow hadn't watched it yet, much to my astonishment. After the movie ended, she blurted out in confusion, "What on earth did I just watch?!?" to much laughter all around.

Not long after that, she returned the favor by introducing me to one of her favorite movies: Nacho Libre. As I'm sure you've already guessed, I responded in kind.

After watching this commercial, the exact same thought went through my mind -- only without quite so much levity.

Ads are so weird.
