Man I really think the "iPanel" will not only replace the TV but also the personal computer... Maybe way down the road, but if you were to combine a tv screen with a personal computer (or server that would beam hard drive accessibility to other "ipanel's" AND couple that with a game console, apple would not only change tv but also computers gaming home networks you name it. That's how it's supposed to be though an apple television set is probably the first baby step that the company would have to take. Regardless of what it does or doesn't do, I'd surely buy one for every room in my house. God forbid my 2 year old is subjected to growing up with a samsung TV and comcast cable!!!! LOL....

I do not see Apple bringing much value on the tv set front.

But, Apple could claim to be first with 64-bit pixels, and Phil the Schill could tweet that Apple TVs are 17.2 billion times better than Samsung's.

It would fall a bit flat, though, when it came out that Apple was really buying Samsung 30-bit panels....

Yeah, sure, it's me that doesn't understand Apple.

Pray tell what "more" this commodity panel will do for me in the context of your post??? Everything you described can be achieved with outstanding software packaged in an external set-top box, no new panel required. :)

You might want to re-read what I said. Apple will not go into the space with a commodity product. The unknown issue is what are they proposing to do with the experience and what does that require. I personally think it requires them building the panel. Even at the simplest experience using a TV for HDMI from an Apple TV only sucks. Two remotes, the stupid TV startup animation and sound, the ugly OSD information indicating I am using HDMI, the OSD overlay for volume control, etc.

Using another input will just make it worse as you have to go through the source switching UI instead of having something integrated into the Apple TV experience.

I would make the whole device, not sure what Apple will do, but those basic issues are a problem for them. They could also go the "Made for AppleTV" partner route where there is a dumb panel only mode and back channel control for things like volume, source switching, etc. I do not see them leaving these issues un-addressed. The can and likely will keep selling a standalone box either way. The integration into other environments is enough of a reason to do so.
