But maybe this hire is a realization that Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps are amateur drivel and Apple must do better if they are going to go head to head with Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Showtime original programming and the like.
Oh man, you don't seem to have the slightest clue of what's coming.

The more time passes, the more I suspect there's a reason they haven't, such as a major content deal with Netflix that would be lost if an acquisition occurs. If anything, I think Disney would make the most sense. You get content, a huge network (ABC), AAA brands incl. Star Wars and Marvel, Pixar.... they would be able to parlay that into a major competitor overnight. As for anyone saying "oh well in that case I'll just not watch any of that stuff again," don't bother lying.

Steve's dead. He's been dead for a long time. And Apple doesn't just make computers anymore, and hasn't for a long time.

Microsoft doesn't just make software anymore. Amazon just bought Whole Foods and last I checked they aren't just selling books anymore. I don't see Netflix relying on mailing DVDs to people. If Apple doesn't diversify, they will only ever make a tiny fraction of the computers sold, be too dependent on one product line (without MRR, by the way), and will eventually end up like Palm or Packard Bell. Is that what you want?

As for the projects Steve ended, they were bad variations of the core model. They certainly weren't anything like we're working with today.

I suspect they will buy Sony some day. While they have great relationship with Disney and it's a great brand, Disney also has a lot of stuff apple doesn't need. (E.g. Theme parks). If they buy Sony they get content, but they also get things like the sensor business - apple loves to own the core technologies in its products, and if they had exclusive access to sony's photo sensors that would be quite a coup for them.

I hope they can do better than Planet of the Apps. As much as I want Apple to succeed in original programming and was excited to see Planet. I watched the first episode and was waaaay underwhelmed. its like a boring version of shark tank that has no personality and no point. The mentors seem useless and they make app creation seem like anyone can do it. I thought there it should have been focused on the app and not the people. The apps should have been the main characters. Get rid of the celebrities.
There's no way this will ever have a season 2 without a complete makeover.

And another TV content provider will arise with it's own subscription. So to see all your favorite TV shows you need:
- Your cable subscription
- Netflix
- Amazon Prime
- Apple TV (soon)

This fragmentation isn't helping anyone. I'll get my stuff from torrents again and buy the show on DVD if I like a show.
Exactly
