At least is "constantly' improving and its still in beta...

for how long now ? I wish Apple would give me a straight answer for this.

(Their soo dam secretive) :p

Set Siri to a non English language and then try to ask for directions to a "Subway" restaurant or to play an English titled song like "Angel" by the band "Massive Attack". Good luck with the outcome.

Some people like that. My mom cracks up every time Siri says something that isn't a command. Idk why... it's not really funny but whatever. I personally use siri all the time when I take naps or am baking something. Occasionally ask it math when I'm too lazy to type a few numbers. and other misc. things.

I'm just shaming myself and all of us who first asked those things with Siri

It's new toy excitement.

Maybe it should work in English first?

Not sure if anybody has noticed, but Siri seems to have, in the words of Sgt. Lincoln Osiris, gone "Full ruh-tarred" lately. I ask it to add milk to the shopping list, and it begins dialing contacts I haven't spoken to in years. Ask to play a particular song, and the next thing I know, it's plotting navigation routes to a warehouse in Arkansas.

The other night, she suddenly yelled "I don't understand that, Vito," and woke me out of a deep sleep. Pretty sure she's drunk these days.

So Finnish ditched due to enough people leaving from Nokia beign recruited by Apple?

Yes, that was a bit odd. If it's ditched, I have a feeling it's due to the special Finnish grammar compared to Western languages and a lack of resources for it at Apple. It would perhaps take more resources to implement than many of the others.

There you go. I just compared British English to American English.

An amusing little read on further differences: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/14/opinion/14iht-edtharoor.html

Funny! Have you seen this one…?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG0LyVIM2Aw

Are you American? Change your Siri settings to "British English" and have fun! Of corse you can compare languages, even Cantonese vs Polish, but you cannot put variations in pronunciation within a language within the same realm in speech recognition... Machines have a hard time understanding people, unlike humans

In Portugal the Brazilian immigrants are a bit like the Mexican immigrants in the US, usually very low income, extremely undereducated people that come to Lisbon (the capital of Portugal) to work in mcdonalds and jobs like that.

I am a Portuguese student in Economics living in Lisbon until I finish my degree than off to London for my master's and to work in investment baking or venture capital, and I can tell you if Brazilian Portuguese becomes an option for Siri but not actual Portuguese than I'll just keep using British English as usual. I do not want to listen to Siri speak Brazilian.

Pardon any mistakes, it's 3 am in GMT time and I'm lying in bed typing on my iPhone and about to go to sleep. Good night :)

I was disgusted to read your comment.

The next time you speak about Brazilians, try to show a little more respect. Portugal is a small microbe near Brazil, in economic and cultural terms. Instead of speaking of Brazilians immigrant, I will speak about Portuguese immigrants in Brazil, they were largely: castaways, convicts, rapists, criminals... I think the quality of Brazilian immigrants who made the reverse trip is much better.

The Portuguese from Portugal looks the sound of a horse neighing, I do not want to hear it neither.

Sir, you can feel disgusted all you want, that's your perrogative. It doesn't make my comment any less of a statistical fact. Statistically speaking the large majority by far of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal are low income, extremely uneducated people that come to work on jobs that require nothing but a work visa and pay the very minimum wage. In fact the reasons they choose to come to Portugal are very simple: they understand the language and the minimum wage they earn here allows them to have far better living conditions than the one's they would have in Brazil, even send some money back home to relatives living in one of Brazil's slums or starving.

And yes Brazil is big... Your point being? "Mine is bigger than yours"? Yes, Brazilian slums surrounding Brazil's main urban centers alone have a larger population than Portugal. Yes, Brazil is a big country, bigger than any European country, I believe. Is also considered by the IMF, UN, and many others to be a developing country! Which basically means that it lacks things that in developed countries are considered common place, and that the meme "1st world problems" doesn't really affect it's population, aren't you guys lucky...

If I cared even the slightest about your opinion I should be the one offended, because where I merely stated general statistical facts about a small segment of the Brazillian population (those that move to Portugal) that were in no way an insult to Brazil or Brazillians, you felt the need to try to insult a country and say that it's population sounds like horses... How old are you? The reason I do not wish to have my iPhone speaking Brazilian is probably similar to why an American would not want a Scottish Siri, or a English man would probably find it odd to listen to a Texan speak every time he asked his iPhone "do I need an umbrella?" (It's just a joke, I love, I really do, the British weather, especially when I'm melting under the Portuguese summer that seams to last more than half the year, it might be fun when taking an swim while on vacation, not so fun when doing your everyday life).

And tell me, if Brazil is such a cultural beacon of the modern world why on earth do Brazillian students from more well of families come to Portugal's average or even worst universities and treat them like Harvards or Oxfords when compared to the one's they had in Brazil?

I probably could argue more in favor of Brazil's economical development in the last few years than you, as you seem incapable of rational arguments, I guess the brazilian stereotype of irrationally dumb people (oh sorry I mean "extremely passionate and emotional") is alive and well. Even feeling "disgusted" with simple facts, I guess Wikipedia also disgusts you, or the UN reports on world development. Defensive much?

I consider my self European first, Portuguese second, the reason I commented on the subject was merely because I feel that since I'm a fluent Portuguese speaker and familiar with Brazilian Portuguese I could give some information about the differences between the two, since as I said before, those differences are more than an accent and a few spelling differences.

Why don't you go ahead and feel disgusted again? Have fun. I will not engage you further, or even bother to read you "disgusted" reply.

Post Script: You're welcome for all the money that Portuguese (or as you call them, rapists and criminals) and other European and Western business men have invested in Brazil that is helping the country to play catch up and be able to do more than "samba" the night way and wait for the problems to fix themselves.

"You know nothing Jon Snow"

My intention was not to offend anyone, but if you had received a good education would know that Portuguese immigrants who came to Brazil were nearly all bandits. Against facts there are no arguments.

Statistics from whom? In the past Brazilians dentists were prohibited to come into Portugal, because they were better prepared than the portuguese natives.

Brazil is larger than Portugal in every sense, not just size, study more. To get an idea: the rich Brazilian population is larger than the entire Portuguese population. You are with a jealousy of centuries, because of the fact Rio de Janeiro was chosen to be the capital of the Portuguese Overseas Empire in place of Lisbon ...

If you had not cared about my opinion I think you would not had written this bible of nonsense that you wrote. What about my age in this discussion? I'm certainly older than you, and despite the supposed inferiority of my country I know more history of Portugal than you do.

Friend, you seem to know very little history and geography, I wonder what investment bank hires a dumb like you. You talked about Brazilian universities, people here look for outside courses for many reasons, one of which is: because it is easier to be admitted. The Federals Brazilians universities are very tought.

If at least you were able to argue something. I think I'm not the only person here emotional and passionate.

Glad you considered yourself first an European, by the way, Portugal is a heavy backpack to Europe, a true piano, a carrier, an anchor. Besides wine Portugal produces anything else?

You are very innocent, "there is no free lunch" my dear, if anyone invests here in Brazil the reason is simple, it will have double the money back, triple... I am proud of our samba and many other things, and Portugal, has what? Pastel de Belém?

Brazil has done more to Portugal and Western Countries than you know. However, unfortunately this is way above your knowledge, spent more time on books.

Despite having to read such idiocy of an overbearing like you I'm proud of my Portuguese roots, can not say the same for many other Brazilians who feel ashamed of having been "colonized" by Portugal, common sense here is that if we had been colony of Britain we would be much better.

About Siri in Portuguese, the differences are really huge, but I think given the strategic importance of Brazil, (even if you do not accept is the truth) Brazilian Portuguese should have priority.

Again I apologize if I offended you, it was not my intention. I didn't even compare the portuguese hairy woman with the Brazilian Goddesses to begin with, among a lot of other things.

PS: Yes, size matters, at least sometimes... If you heard something else it was a lie, probably to preserve your pride...

You seem hell bent on comparing 2 completely disproportionate countries in both size and population. Why you are trying to create a competition for the "the best country" in the first place is completely beyond me. If you wish to compare and run your little private competition I would advise you to use relative metrics in such comparisons, like a percentage per capita, as in percentage of the population with access to a proper sewage collection and disposal system, for example... Or percentage of the population with an iPhone, as opposed to number of total iPhones. There's more iPhones in Brasil than even in a country like Switzerland with an exceptionally high standard of living, so? Are the Swiss supposed to buy dozens of iPhones so that they can win one of your little competitions of who's bigger? Also sir, I recall using the word "invested" as in "investment" which typically is made with an expectancy of return higher than what was invested in the first place, otherwise I would have used the word "donation", of which Brazil has also received many from humanitarian programs. So no, I'm not "very innocent". And I also object to you calling me dear, by the way.

To even suggest that any Portuguese citizen would in 2014 would feel "jealous" that in 1807 the Portuguese royal family ran away from Napolion's invading armies during the peninsular war (1807-1814) and chose to run to Brasil just shows how delusional and irrational your "arguments" are... No one even remembers that from primary school, it's a footnote in the country's history since it's formation in 1139. And you seam to make a point of saying that many centuries ago (how very current of you), Portugal would send his criminals to Brazil. This is not unheard of you know, perhaps you've heard of too tiny islands called England and Australia? And I still don't see what's your point! If you are so interested in crime you should also look into the crime rates, Portugal has one of the lowest of the EU, Brazil on the other hand... Well let's not talk about all those (by now common place) kidnappings, murders, carjackings, robberies, mass muggings in beaches, human trafficking networks, gang and drug related shoot-outs, etc, that plague your urban centers.
And your little story about dentists had nothing to do with quality, but with the the shear number of them, Brazilian dentists found out that they could become rich working in Portugal while simultaneously living in better conditions and all of a sudden thanks to relaxed immigration laws towards Brazil, Portugal became flooded with dentists (known for being cheaper not better), there wasn't enough cavities in the country for so many dentists! Lol If you want to talk about quality of higher education, Portuguese professionals from the country's best universities have no problem finding employment anywhere in Europe. One of several very good examples is the fact that many multinationals from Germany (known worldwide for the exceptional quality of its engineering) run hiring programs (some even established formally by the German government) directly in our best universities looking for engineers, so next time you enter a Porsche or BMW, remember that, since you seen to despise everything Portugal for some reason. And there's similar examples in many other areas, from medicine, to management. The only reason "federal universities" in Brazil are hard to get into is because your education system doesn't have enough capacity to service the population nor your emerging economy has enough qualified positions to absorb all the graduates if it did.

In my initial post I made a point, a very simple point, or so I thought:
Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are different in more than just accent and the spelling of a few words. And thusly I would rather keep my Siri speaking good old English then having it speak Brazilian, that's it. Never did I claim that it did not make more financial sense for Apple to give priority to implementing Brazilian Portuguese in Siri. Never did I said one country or language is better than the other one or anything similar.

My comment about the profile of the average Brazilian immigrant now and in the past couple of decades (present not centuries ago) being uneducated and having a very low income is merely a statistical fact. Never did I make any comment about the entire Brazilian population, neither did I make any judgment about the country it self. You sir, did that your self, you clearly have some sort of inferiority complex and feel the need to attack by the mere mention of the word Brazil if not accompanied by a glowing complement about your beaches. Well, a lot of what could be said about the social conditions in Brazil would not be very nice at all, but that is not my fault or concern.
The "inferiority of your country" as you said (not I) is only in your head, never did I claim that. You seem to thing that anything but praising Brazil as perfect is an attack. That's your problem, not mine.

Now sir, I am walking away from this truly ridiculous and sad discussion as you seen incapable of being rational or even polite, the reason I questioned your age was from the complete lack of maturity shown in your arguments, if they can even be called that. Even resorting to personal attacks and insults. From calling me ignorant, dumb, innocent, idiot, overbearing, to saying that Portuguese people sound like horses, are ignorant and the women are hairy (??), to finally as a coup de grâce even making a comment about the size of my penis! You sir, are a disgrace to your country, and to our race, a perfect example of a small limited ignorant prejudiced simple person dumping his own frustrations, insecurities and inferiority complexes on the internet.

I am now unsubscribing from this treat so as to not have to endure any longer your incoherent and irrational ramblings even if by accident and finding if there's a way to block you from sight preventing me from ever suffering from reading your irrelevant opinion again.

And by the way, if you're going to quote a meme from game of thrones at least do it properly.

I apologise to other forum members that have suffered reading thru these completely out of topic comments in which I participated.
Let's go back to discussing the next iPhone Apple will be having us buy in the fall, shall we? :) This one sounds like it will be especially hard to resist, I love it when they change the designs, and my Siri agrees :p

Well, I agree with the last part. Sorry folks, but this brother needed my reply.
