This is where Tim shines.

It is a smart play for Apple to further monetize non-Mac users, as they are the ones that probably make up the majority of iOS users.

Why leave that money on the table for competitors to grab?

The focus on iOS is coming full circle, as it is now the hub that Apple will use to satellite it's software services out of.

Hopefully this means the software quality will go up, because Winfans WILL use something else if Apple gets it wrong.

However, this may pose a danger to the Mac altogether.

why would having a new form of iTunes be a danger to Mac?

Probably not a danger to the mac. Windows has improved over the years, but not to the point to be dangerous to mac users (general users).

Maybe..Tim's apple sees again the need to focus a bit on the mac, so tempting (introducing) and pulling Windows users over to apple's platform with their music subscription (and their focus TV & Arcade) may be the reason for windows apps.

The latest MacBook Pro shows some signs of a slight focus shift that the mac has "still" draw potencial, especially the new mac pro 2019 (though may be late, but only time will tell).

Marketing (data collecting) runs the tech world now, so apple has their data research numbers to know what to focus on. Goodbye to the days of "risk". Tim's new apple is about "the beans" (data and marketing numbers to direct innovation).

If apple is looking at Windows customers right now, there is a good reason..

I do not like this apparent lack of planning. These guys first need to prepare the backend/ frontend and get replacements ready before discontinuing things. New apps should be ready before discontinuing old apps.

It will like a glass of ice water in hell.

Windows is looking pretty good.

Been using Windows 10 on a 2-in-1 laptop for a year now since my iPad 12.9" stopped working reliably. Honestly no complaints. Runs fast, works well. I actually like the tablet mode but I only use a web browser in it for reading/surfing.

Back on topic... There are no words to describe just how bad and slow iTunes for Windows is. It's an absolute embarrassment to Apple that they let this program still exist. I'm looking forward to a UWP version of Apple Music, that would be fantastic.

How? The new media apps for the Mac are alpha quality at best, and the AppleTV app is beyond buggy and riddled with ads.

Take care of your knitting first Apple.

Somehow Apple still believes they are delivering hardware and software of the same quality as when Steve would bite off the heads of the dev team if an icon color didn’t come out right. Alas, with the sales remaining sky high, I doubt they’ll ever quality-control the lazy halfbaked products they dump onto the world.

In macOS Catalina, Apple eliminated the iTunes app and replaced it with new Music, Podcasts, and TV apps, but similar changes were not made to Apple's iTunes for Windows app. Windows 10 users currently need to access services like Apple TV+ and Apple Music on the web, which is not ideal.

This is the context of my remarks.

The point of iTunes on Windows was so that people who owned a PC could buy an iPod. With iOS devices no longer dependent on iTunes, what's the point of offering these apps on Windows? A bigger priority for Apple should be figuring out how to sell AirPods and Apple Watch to Android users.

Apple seems to be massively overestimating how much anyone will ever care about Apple TV+ (and Apple Music, and Apple Arcade, and all the rest of Apple's "Me too!" products, too.)

Can't i just keep iTunes? I use iTunes on a daily basis to backup my phone, and to sync my local music library.

I can use services like Apple TV+, Apple Music and/or Apple Arcade directly on the phone.

But i hope that they improve iTunes in terms of performance, it's horribly bloated and slow for what it is.

Trust me. Tim and Apple are no more interested in the Mac than they were before. The only interest they have negating bad press. When they realized the Mac pro wouldn't just die and were getting bad press about the state of it, they update it. When they were selling four year old hardware for the same price as when it was released and the press started turning bitter, they update. The only reason they are going back on the butterfly keyboard is bad press. That's all Apple's Mac unit does now, just react. Heck they started with the iPad now. Yeah you have the iPad pro with pen support now but all that was was a reaction to the surfaces from Microsoft gaining traction finally. If not for surface the newest iPad would just be a normal Ipad with no pen support but probably a lot thinner. As of now Apples good days where tech companies were reacting to what Apple was releasing its now Apple reacting to other tech. Maybe that will turn around but I doubt it while Cook is CEO

You're right, but I think in this context, Tim and Apple have realized it's time to broaden their horizons and monetize (or otherwise strengthen their appeal to) Windows-using Apple customers. My Dad recently made the switch to iPhone (his first) but uses a 4 yr old HP Desktop w/Windows 10 - ease of use both with the phone itself and the software (like iTunes) is paramount for him.

I don't get the hate for iTunes on Windows tbh. Its home to my many thousand song music library, 100s of films all nicely organised in 1 place. To sync the stuff onto my iDevices is as seamless and plugging into the PC.

Whats no to like?

would it be too much to ask them to fix the Mac app first? it's a nightmare. performs worse than iTunes ever did.

So let me get this straight. Apple is willing to write the Windows apps from the ground up in UWP. Yet their macOS app Music is basically nothing more than a rebranded iTunes, with a lot of its quirks still in place. Nice.

If they rewrote it from scratch as well, everyone would be compaining its worse. If you are going to do it from the ground up, do i right. Apple has a problem with that, which is why they probably just left all the old bugs in.

Hey, there is a 'feedback' form haha.

Your example is only one use case and only relates to hardware sales, apple has shown it want to grow it's service sales which requires and app for icloud, Apple Music etc.

Not so fast. UWP doesn’t automatically make an app better. There is still plenty of scope in UWP to get things very wrong.

The wasteland of garbage that is the Microsoft Store in Windows 10 is a testament to this. Apple can easily contribute yet more trash if they aren’t very careful.

(I’m not saying that the iOS and macOS app stores are necessarily superior. There is plenty of rubbish there too.)

An Apple TV+ app built using the Universal Windows Platform would allow the service to be accessed on the Xbox One, expanding Apple TV+ to platforms beyond smart TVs, Apple devices, and set-top boxes.

I've been waiting for Apple to show some love to the Xbox One, but I would rather they provide Apple Music... Spotify has it's footprints on both PS4 and Xbox One. Hopefully Apple can not only add Apple TV+ to Xbox One, but Apple Music too...

Give us imessage for windows! Switching to bootcamp shouldnt mean losing access...

Did you read the article? Apple wants UWP developers. Therefore, their new Music app for Windows will be written for UWP.
Microsoft is always changing the direction for UWP. I hope there's also a Win32 version.

That x86 only support is some extremely optimistic and wishful thinking. I just don't believe that's realistic and will happen. I'd say iTunes will be discontinued and only available for this reason. Probably, moved to archived Apple support for awhile until it's remnants are removed from all Apple support. Otherwise, the replacement software for iTunes will be x86-64.

People should keep in mind that macOS only makes up about 10% of desktop computers which is not much when Windows makes up close to 90%.

Even though macOS is a superior operating system, at this point I have a hard time seeing what Apple can possibly do to catch up.

If I were to take an uneducated stab at this, I would say Apple needs to make a $700 or less laptop as well as run an advertising campaign that shows how iMessage, Facetime, etc. work well when you have both iOS and macOS running together.

I'm surprised how many people are not aware of the integration between the two systems.

But without a larger macOS user base, Apple needs to provide Windows support.

Apple and a lot of "expert" analysts seem to think Apple's revenue will be based on services. I don't see why I need to get one more thing. There is no exclusive content I care about. Heck Hulu has content I would care about but I am not getting it. I am so sick of all the choices. And I am not being an old fuddy duddy. Yes I still have cable. And watch live tv more often than Netflix, but I just don't need another streaming service. I rather own my content. I still buy songs on iTunes. I buy albums on iTunes. I do not want to stream it. I don't even like modern music. i don't need to "discover" some new artist that will disappear in three years anyway. So I guess Grandpa Simpson is right. I am not with it anymore, but I think I am still young enough to know this future the analysts are predicting and Apple wanting I really hope backfires and fails. Hopefully enough heads will roll at Apple, that they go back to what they were good at.

Then maybe they can rename themselves back to Apple Computer, Inc.
