Leopold II, the most vile man ever to exist; worse than Genghis Khan, Stalin, Pol Pot and Hitler combined. I will die on this hill. The sun will rise in the west and set in the east before I change my mind. Leo's only motivation was greed.
I don't think there's many who'd disagree with that assessment. He was just vile. Severing hands for not making a rubber quota and severing them just because? He was just flat out an evil evil human being.

The judicial authorities in France and Belgium will now decide whether to investigate the complaints further and bring criminal charges.

They investigate themselves? Reminds me of how the Country starting with I is always investigating its own (*alleged) war crimes
Politics by innuendo are best left at the front door.

The way I see it, this can only be good for Apple. Even if the allegations are found to be true, it is simply an opportunity for Apple to further clean up its supply chain and when it does, it turns out to be in an even stronger position in the supplier responsibility scorecard. All they have to do is "we said it, we meant it, thank you for finding a flaw, we'll fix it. If the allegations are not true, then it solidifies that Apple really is doing what it says it is doing.

Yes ….exactly 5 years left according to some. But I’ve lost track of how many times the goal post has been moving regarding the death of the planet. Technically we should’ve been extinct at least five times by now. 😁
More times than that. David Bowie was already singing about this with “Five Years” in 1972.

But the locals do use it and see benefits from it that they don't see from aid given to countries under the terms of the Washington Consensus.
It's Called ODA and Japan has done more than other nations regarding humanitarian Aid since the end of WW2. China steals valuable land and mineral rights from 3rd world countries from this BS loan agreement when they can't repay it. There is no good in what China does for these nations that get trapped in China BS.

Nothing to see here, just another corrupt country trying to make an extra buck on useless accusations. 🤷‍♂️

Tim Cook has the blood of at least 1.3 million dead Chinese people on his hands. China had a zero-COVID policy that the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people supported (because it was life-saving). Due to pressure from multinational corporations such as Apple and Nike, the Chinese Communist Party abruptly ended their zero-COVID policy on December 7, 2022, causing 1.3 million deaths (according to Airfinity) in just two months by February 6, 2023.

Cook is an evil man who values profits over people. In late 2022, he knew full well COVID would spread like wildfire in China if the CCP cancelled their zero-COVID policy, but he didn't care because, despite Apple making enormous profits during that time, it is never enough for him, and he wanted to make even more in profits. Therefore, I would be thouroghly unsurprised if the criminal complaints Apple was hit with over the Congo mineral trade are valid.

I would like to see some evidence on how and who pilaged the minerals and if you have the know how of the supply chain and its operators then why not disrupt the the supply chain at the source , or arrest its operators instead of asking the customers to do the due diligence.

If Cook had valued profits M4 Mini would never be released.

Having valuable resources in your country should be good for the country, its citizens and its economy.

And yet, here we are in a 30+ year conflict over who gets it all to themselves.

What a lovely species we are

yup, humans are really sad creatures. Centuries of evolution and we learn nothing.

on a topic side, I think this is just another money extortion project.

You are really going out of your way to criticise Tim Cook (judging by your post history), to the point where you are making comments that are blatantly untrue.

If you want to hate, at least hate right. That’s all I ask.

Are you really saying capitalism can only exist with zero regulation or otherwise it's "not capitalism"?

And, if we managed to tear down every single shred of regulations, how would that solve the issues of environmental destruction and human conflict in any meaningful way?
Everybody wants to jump to extremes and think that extremes prove a point. They don't.

There is a difference between boundaries and interference. Environmental destruction and human conflict are caused by government action or lack of action and have nothing to do with capitalism.

You fundamentally misunderstand capitalism, if you think that. There is no incentive to do what is "good for the world" in capitalism. There is plenty of incentive to do what's good for yourself (i.e. spend less money on a car).

Whether or not electric vehicles are "good for the world" would have no effect on the individual purchaser in pure, economically rational capitalism. The Prisoner's Dilemma is a basic economic example that shows individuals making bad global choices because they make the most sense individually.

(And such situations are the times where interference can produce better economical outcomes, by forcing everybody to make the same, shared choice, even if that offends people who value individual freedoms. Not that governments are frequently effective at doing that, especially in divided countries.)

And socialism has never worked anyplace on earth and yet, here you are professing it as the solution. I trust freedom and the people, you don't. Got it. You know why government interference does not work? Because you conveniently leave out real world government corruption. If people cannot make the right decision in society, there is absolutely no reason to believe that those same people in government will make better decisions. So you fundamentally do NOT understand government.

Corporations corrupt governments to profit off war crimes and human misery.

What is new?..

P.S. But hey, we've got LGBTQXYZ emotes now, surely they're doing good things, right?

That's assuming guilt. It's possible Apple does due diligence and this is a spurious complaint. It's also possible Apple is guilty; making a judgment in this extremely complex issue before all facts are known is unwarranted.
Critical thinking FTW! 👏🏼

My comments about Tim Cook being resposible for the deaths of at least 1.3 million people in China are correct according to the Wall Street Journal and Airfinity. I will cite my two sources below.

As though Apple had any power to force the Chinese government to do something they didn’t want to.

It just goes to show that China made the wrong call to quarantine its people indefinitely. There was growing discontent over the never ending lockdowns and in hindsight, opting for quarantines over vaccinations and expansion of ICU capacity merely delayed the inevitable, because it meant the populace never built up the resistance necessary to combat the virus (which was never going to go away). Not to mention that virtually nothing had been done during these two years to prepare the Chinese people for the inevitable re-opening.

The rushed re-opening is solely on the Chinese government. Apple has nothing to do with this.

The very first sentence of that Wall Street Journal article says Apple played a "major role" in persuading the CCP to cancel their zero-COVID policy. Here is that first sentence:

"A letter from the founder of the world’s largest iPhone assembler played a major role in persuading China’s Communist Party leadership to accelerate plans to dismantle the country’s zero-tolerance Covid-19 policies, according to people familiar with the matter."

And I call BS on that.

The real problem is that the targeted lockdown approach that China tried to take with the COVID outbreaks ultimately didn’t work with the much more transmissible, though less severe, Omicron variant. I believe it was this growing discontent from being forced to stay at home with no endgame in sight, and not any pressuring from Apple or Foxconn, that ultimately forced the hand of the Chinese government into opening up.

I like to think we're still an extremely young species that is still in its toddler years... we will mature, but will the planet still be here when we do?

Common sense is the evidence. History is the evidence. Truth is the evidence. I agree lost cause here, propaganda warriors will never see the light.

The terrorists who invaded country I are free to surrender any time they want, and bring the war which they declared to an end.
