This is nice and all but how come only AIDS gets special recognition from Apple? Just this past weekend I found out a family friend has one month to live. They went to the doctor because they were throwing up and had stomach pains and found out they were full of cancer. Yes I know Apple can't highlight every cause out there but why is AIDS special?

I hope all this recent attention to AIDS isn't the result of Charlie Sheen. That reckless, promiscuous, druggie is the last person you'd want as an AIDS poster boy.

The reply wasnt rude at all. He replied that the comment was ignorant (it is).

Your reply was rude. He was just stating his opinion on where it would be better directing research funds. He did not say that it's useless, or that Africans should die. He just think that priorities should be somewhere else. Can you live with the idea that people have different opinions?

I'm not sure that left/right wing has anything to do with the choice of campaign, I'm fairly right wing, but I certainly support World Aids Day. I don't suffer from the ill-educated preconceptions that might lead people to think that right-wingers would be anti such a campaign. Surely such notions are so outdated as to be pitiable?
I never said people who lean to the right are against such causes. All I was saying is that the left tend to support causes like this more simply because it fits with their agenda. It's not rocket science.

So who decides what charities or causes GETsupport? You?
Apple supported Product (RED) well before Cook was CEO. Keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

LOL! I was waiting for a reply like that. I was stating facts and apparently the facts offend you in some way.

replied to the wrong post. I was answering the OP who said Apple was donating to RED because Tim Cook is gay. The OP was deleted. My bad.

Not trying to be a downer or anything. But like one of the previous guy said, AIDS is mostly contracted disease. I wonder if it would be batter if they direct this toward cancer or something else.
HIV/AIDS can also be passed from a pregnant mother to a child which is part of the reason why we have
Worldwide, 220 000 [190 000–260 000] children became newly infected with HIV in 2014

Also it is impossible to make one cure for all kinds of cancer so if we were to instead focus on the leading cause of cancer deaths that would be lung cancers (along with trachea and bronchus cancers) which is in 5th place globally, one spot ahead of HIV/AIDS. Source. And that type happens to be mostly caused by smoking, so I'm not sure your argument of why we shouldn't focus on AIDS is a valid one at all.

World AIDS day has been around since 1988 so it has nothing to do with him announcing that he has HIV.

Sorry for your friend and I truly hope for the best. I've had a few friends that suffered from cancer but we're able to recover. But I would answer your question and say: why is cancer special? Because both of us have loved ones that are suffering from it. There are charities that focus on cancer, Alzheimer's, autism, etc. you name it there are people supporting it. Why do YOU choose which charity you give to?

Info about RED; Created in 2002, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria supports large-scale prevention, treatment and care programs for these three infectious diseases.[3] Today, a quarter of all international funding for HIV/AIDS-related programs, over half for tuberculosis, and almost three-quarters for malaria worldwide comes from The Global Fund.[citation needed] The concept of “performance-based funding” is central to the organization and only those grant recipients who can demonstrate measurable and effective results from the monies received will be able to receive additional financing.[4] 100% of the funds generated by Red partners and events goes to Global Fund programs that provide medical care and support services for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. No overhead is taken by either Red or the Global Fund. Red is the largest private sector donor to the Global Fund, and has generated over $150 million for HIV/AIDS programs in Africa. In November 2013 Jony Ive and Marc Newson hosted an auction at Sotheby's to raise millions for the fund.[5][6] The event was attended by major celebrities including Bono, The Edge, Hayden Panettiere, and Courtney Love.[7

What's the "agenda"? Maybe i'll have to ask my liberal friends cause I can't imagine that helping to fight AIDS, TB, and malaria in Africa is part of some dastardly plot to take over the US or something.

Charity is Communism. Caring is Marxist.

Look at me! I'm being edgy and opinionated on the internet! :D

Apple would do much better focusing their huge pile of money on something else, but, Apple is a left wing leaning organization and the CEO is gay so no surprise.

I bought my first Product Red item from Steve.

I hope that AIDS becomes a thing of the past, so that the money that is involved:
Fighting the disease
Curing the disease
Teaching how not to get the disease
Lost to the smart people that have it that cannot invent new things

Can be used to cure other diseases.

Personally I'd like to see some form of Apple Foundation where money could be distributed to fund disease awareness and prevention, clean water and education throughout those Third World countries that really need help.

I get it I'm not trying to be an ass, when I said that. I was just wondering in general maybe there IS a better use for the money, or resources. Do an analysis constrain to third world countries, and see if AIDS is the worst disease they are dealing with, maybe Malaria?
Because every penny donated to a
I agree. AIDS doesn't even rate in the top ten of the leading causes of death:
  1. Heart disease
  2. Cancer (malignant neoplasms)
  3. Chronic lower respiratory disease
  4. Accidents (unintentional injuries)
  5. Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases)
  6. Alzheimer's disease
  7. Diabetes (diabetes mellitus)
  8. Influenza and pneumonia
  9. Kidney disease (nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis)
  10. Suicide (intentional self-harm).

Well AIDS as a cause of death didn't even exist until a few decades ago. And it's also likely that with well funded research and social programs we can eliminate or almost eliminate the disease as a cause of death within the next few decades.

The Product RED campaign is not an Apple project, it is Bono's. Companies that use the logo and that shade of red have to donate half of the profit to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Why do we need to care more about cancer than AIDS? It doesn't matter that one is communicable and the other isn't. People are suffering because they screw. Humans have sex. It's what we do. Sometimes it doesn't end well. Saying their suffering is less important than those with another disease is just cruel.

I'm wearing the red apple watch band and use the red ipad smart cover. My partner has the silicone red iphone case. Do we think we are saving the world? No. But we are presented with a beautiful thing at the same price that gives money to those who need it more than we do. Everybody benefits.

And I've had people ask about them too. Where did you get that color? What is product red? etc. Spreading the word helps raise awareness, so it benefits us here too.
