I'm removing DRM from my legally purchased iTunes TV programmes just because i hate it. Feels better somehow.

If you have an iOS device why would you want to sit and read an iBook on your Mac? It would seem to me the better user experience is on an iOS device.

For me, there are reference books that I'd like to load into DEVONthink so that I can search and cross-reference them.

stupid pirates!

it was only a matter of time though
I'm surprised it took this long.

You can't read iBook on your desktop. Not even Mac OS X can read iBooks. This is the main reason I stopped buying ebooks from iBooks.

Now I can. Thanks "stupid pirates"
Everyone who wants iBooks on OS X should provide feedback to Apple.

Make sure you add reasons as to why it would be a good idea. And do suggest some useful features for iBooks on OS X. For example, the ability to have multiple books open fir reference when you are write a paper.

Seems kind of pointless to me.. just read on your iPhone and iPad
Think outside the box. Think different.

Yes. You should also say that the app quality on OSX/Windows/iOS sucks ass. I've started to pay more on iBooks even though I don't have many options.

Does it matter? Other platforms were cracked earlier than this, and pirates already distribute those books DRM free.

However, the good publishers publish their books DRM free so the issue is moot.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A406 Safari/7534.48.3)

I've never understood DRM, it's premise seems to be to penalise those who purchase content legally, whilst pirates still get their more flexible content for free.

They're just trying to protect the industry. Just this issue will make the publishers think twice to embrace digital books. And to think that digital books are not totally embraced yet by majority of people.

I mean it makes sense... I pay for a book with my own dollars....why is Apple telling me, "no, you cant read that on a laptop"..... What if for heavens sake, today, i feel like reading it on my laptop......i dont understand why it must be the Apple way or the highway......this is why i have embraced kndle platform on iOS and Mac OS as in my post above

The point for most here is not to obtain the book (for free). The point is to have the ability to take a book that you legally purchased, and use it in a manner that suits your needs or desires (different devise, etc).

I appreciate that Kindle books are available on more platforms thanks to the ubiquitous Kindle App, but still they are ultimately in a proprietary format. A truly open format would allow consumers to buy the book from the best publisher and buy the device from the best device maker, and even switch at will.

It would be the best for the customer, but sadly companies are much more interested in trying to lock us in their ecosystem.

not being able to read iBooks on my mac really is a problem. i decided that a MBA was a better fit for me than having an iPad. so now i can't read the books i legally purchased? and its near impossible to read a 1000+ page book on the iPhone so i really don't count that as an option. either apple needs to come out with a desktop solution or things like this are going to happen.

Imagine what this would be like if the Apple engineers(and others) and hackers combined their intellectual abilities for good things instead of just playing cat and mouse battling it out with each other.

So just tried this and it seems to have moved all the DRM from my music, got stuck on a textbook (the free one) and also removed from two books that I have purchased from iBook Store...

Now when I sync them to my iPad I get an error "<items> were not copied to the iPad "iPad 2" because they cannot be played on this iPad." -- <item> was not copied because the file type is not supported by this iPad.

Guess it doesn't work.

Merit or not, I admit I use Amazon for all my purchase because I like to read also on my laptop and even my desktop and I have seen no reason why this should not also be something I can do.

Amazon allows this so I will continue to purchase from them. I figure this will be a mute thing in the next iOS/OSX system aka Mountain Lion . ;)

It works on Kindle and Nook books. I think it works on almost every format EXCEPT iBooks .ePub

I just checked the website and you are right. I states that it cannot remove DRM's from iBooks. I use iBooks for all my reading (including those purchased from Barnes and Noble and Amazon) so I hadn't noticed if they were removed or not.

This is why I never purchase content from Apple-- I like to own my stuff without stipulations as to how my stuff can or can't be used.

This is a move in the right direction-- until it gets blocked of course.

People are pretty dense... THE CONTENT PUBLISHER REQUIRE DRM, Apple does not have a choice. Apple cannot assure the content on non Apple devices. Same goes for Amazon.
