Just bought a new M2 Mac mini and transferred my old iMac content over onto it. I forgot what a mess it is to get Apple TV, Music, iphone App Store, Mac App Store and iCloud accounts all working when you have a legacy iTunes account which differs from your me.com/iCloud account. I use to have a US iTunes account with some movies on it I have given up on all those downloads, just can't merge anything it's a real mess.

Soon apps and services will instruct us to "Sign into your Apple Account using your Apple ID," and all the confusion will melt away!

So you login to your Apple account with -- your Apple Account? Yeah, that's not confusing. /s

I log into my bank ACCOUNT with my bank ID (user name and password). I should have an Apple Account but use my Apple ID to log in to it.

Haunted all the time with multiple ID’s. fix it Apple. Just to check my trade in status on my phone id have to sign out of iCloud completely then sign back in. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Dear whoever disagreed, what on earth is there to disagree with?

Andddddd...... What about the Apple ID vs whatever the blank they call the ID I've had to use for the Apple Certifications. I can't even remember what they even called it. Moronic is what I called it.

It's not quite on the level of two different kinds of OneDrives, business or personal, which didn't get along in the past and totally confused small business end users; the "easy to use cloud solution" from Microshaft.

So I guess marketing team runs out of tasks to do.
Shockers.
Besides, what a dumb rebrand.
Gonna be more sinister if backend change breaks things.

Then why did they name it Apple ID in the first place? They couldn’t foresee the confusion that now needs to be un-effed up?
Well yes that’s exactly what I think, Apple ID is older than Touch ID and they could not have foreseen all those ID methods

But iCloud still doesn't work correctly after 10 years.

Apple does seem to be trying to be like everyone else, which kind of makes Apple just like everyone else. Apple used to be different. Sure I guess more profits from being like everyone else, but I will miss the old days.

In terms of account merging, I doubt this will happen as there is a lot of licensing involved. I simply downloaded my music from my old account and deleted the account. The music still works to play and you can import the tracks into iTunes and then sync it to the iPhone along with a new account.

Yep.

My one question: why? It’s perfectly fine as it is.
ID means identification. Like Face ID. But there’s more to ‘Apple ID’ than that, so it makes more sense to call it an account.

Everyone knows what an account is. You have a google account. A Facebook account. A YouTube account. Etc. It’s obvious what that is.

Change is always annoying, but really it should have been called account from the beginning. So why not change it. In a year everyone will have gotten used to it, and every new user has a more logical experience.

I say: good call! It’s a better name.

Do you think they want to differentiate between an Apple Accounts and the Digital ID/Licenses?
I just think some agreements wouldn’t allow them to transfer purchases to another user account. But I guess there are ways around it. The old account could be enclosed within the new account. So it would remain two accounts under one login and give access to both account purchases under the one login. But are Apple really going to bother doing that? Considering other issues that exist and lack of fix after many years. I just wish they’d sort out core issues with iCloud before repainting things.

Honestly, it’s most likely because Digital IDs will begin rolling out in the next few years and especially by 2030, and this simplifies any potential confusion there.

EDIT: to be clear, by digital IDs I mean for internet use. Not a digital copy of photo IDs.
I actually think this is the actual reason why. Otherwise, Apple would keep that name as is since it has been this way forever. There is no confusion otherwise Apple would have changed it many years ago.

Actually, “Apple ID” is a lame identifier for such a and powerful framework. “Dave…😳?” as in 2001 (film) wherein the style and sets and tech see to have inspired Apple design, would be a better (not best mind you) identifier.
