Apple ID Help

I used a gmail account when I first set up iTunes before I went fully into the ecosystem. under that gmail account I have 2 aliases. then later when I started getting iPhones and Macs I setup another with my preferred name and alias.
what I want to do is make it so that my preferred name becomes my iTunes account and stop using my gmail email for my iTunes purchase and iCloud storage etc. I have been reading some stuff on the web and the sticky at the top but i'm just confused.
can this be done? can someone help or point me to a known working link/how to?

[doublepost=1518625697][/doublepost]Did you try going into settings and then hitting ur name at the very top and then hitting iTunes and App Store and changing your Apple ID to your preferred one
