Can you have your Apple ID on multiple phones and switch back and forth or does each need a separate log in?

A person can have a single Apple ID on an unlimited number of apple devices. Thats pretty much the whole point of it

It’s what the Apple Ecosystem is all about 🙂 Of course if you’re not on WiFi and planning on using cellular on multiple devices, you’ll have to pop your Sim into whichever device you want to use.

Wouldn't this be the reverse (multiple Apple IDs on one device)? 😛
We use one AppleID for Itunes purchases and the secondary phone has a separate AppleID for messages, Facetime, etc. The primary phone uses the same ID for both.

We have two lines hooked to my account so me and her have an active line for each of us, and then we have our four other phones, two iPads, and three Apple TV’s. You can have as many devices as you want. We just use our phone and the kids use the other ones if they killed the battery on their iPads.
