In my troubleshooting quest to resolve my keyboard issue I was told by Apple Support to erase everything and reboot then login and do a restore.

Do all that and login with Apple ID and it says 2 step verification. The problem is the last 2 numbers of my “trusted number” I’ve never heard before. Support tells me without that phone number there is nothing I can do. So everything is lost apparently.

I’ve never heard of this number and would have had to verify it via text when I added it

Any help?
 
Well, other apple staff told me phone number was stored on SIM card so 2FA code should be sent out and filled automatically. Do you have any other device that is under the same Apple ID?

Your case is the number one reason I hate 2FA: they never truly think about the scenario where you have only one device to get 2FA code, as If that’s some sort of edge case.
2FA is there to protect the account from unauthorised access. But what’s the point of having 2FA if it locks you outside your own home?

Is that number your closed ones? Your friends? Your relatives?

I still haven't enabled 2FA with Apple because of this very fact. 2FA is a great concept, however is it really for everyone?

(Especially when it can't be turned off after x number of days being activated.)

If the number you are seeing as a trusted number is not one you know, put one in that you do know and remove the other. You can't remove it until there is a new number to take it's place.

You don’t have that option.
 
Apple support says there is nothing I can do without that number so all my photos, music, paid tv subscription….everything gone

If you don't recognize the last digits shown of what sounds like the only trusted number listed, it looks like you are locked out.

You can try

Have you never logged out of iCloud on any of your devices before? If so, how did you get past the code?

I am locked out and I can’t believe there’s no other way to authenticate. I have no idea where that number came from and I’m sure I’ve received texts from Apple to verify Apple TV etc with my correct phone number

Has any family member had access to your account? You can try the link I posted where Apple will attempt to validate your account credentials and possibly get you back into your account.

Even with the link you posted you have to know this trusted number. Nobody has access to this account
 
What’s more perplexing is that I would have had to verify this trusted number. That never happened

In some cases, you might be able to speed up the account recovery process or reset your password immediately by verifying a six-digit code sent to your primary email address. You might also be able to shorten the wait time by providing credit-card details to confirm your identity. If you’re given this option, an authorization request goes to the card issuer.*


Apple support says that’s not possible

Apple support says that’s not possible
This is a very tough situation to be in. Only thing I can think of is to see if you can escalate the issue with support. Best wishes on getting this solved
 
In my opinion, Apple should allow a user to turn off 2FA any time he or she wishes to. Make the user go thru an additional screen or two showing what could happen if it is turned off before proceeding forward.
