So,

I finally booted up an Apple IIe I got a while back. When I got it, it was working, it is working now.

However, if I make a typo, I hit the DELETE key and it put some sort of square character there instead and doesn't go backwards, only forwards with more on the square character. I know it may sound stupid, but do you hit the DELETE key to delete the last character or is there something I am missing.

I do recall certain things worked differently from way back when.

Try control-H instead. Been awhile but you might need to upgrade the IIe with enhancement kit for the delete key to behave the way you want along with other benefits like lower case BASIC. Easy way to tell which version you have is the boot screen shows 'Apple ][' for unenhanced and 'Apple //e' for enhanced. You can buy a third party enhancement kit here.

Control-H is the same as left arrow. Use left arrow key if you have it. It removes the last character from the input buffer but the character remains on screen if you want to use the right arrow key to re-intput it into the input buffer. You can press the escape key to move the cursor anywhere on the screen, then press escape again to leave that mode and press the right arrow to accept characters under the cursor into the input buffer.

For example, if you type 10 PRINT "HEELLO", I think you can press left arrow five times to put the cursor on top of the first "E" then press escape to enter cursor move mode, press right arrow key to move the cursor on top the second "E", press escape to leave cursor move mode, then press right arrow key 4 times to reenter "ELLO" into the input buffer. Then press return to enter the line. Type LIST to see the line you entered.
