I remember a time when in every movie you would see the hero use a Mac.

Does Apple not care about product placement any more?

Why do some shows cover up the apple logo? It's free advertisement. Not sure why they would want it covered.

Anyway, Apple doesn't need much product placement anymore. Now with the Mac at least. In almost every TV show I watch there is an iPhone. You can tell what Apple cares about now :(

If anything, I'm seeing more and more product placement in movies and especially TV shows. Take a look at any popular TV series - chances are the laptop's a Mac.

Unless Apple is advertising in a movie by way of product placement it is illegal to show the Apple logo. This is why they cover the logo.

Apple Logo and Apple-owned Graphic Symbols: You may not use the Apple Logo or any other Apple-owned graphic symbol, logo, or icon on or in connection with web sites, products, packaging, manuals, promotional/advertising materials, or for any other purpose except pursuant to an express written trademark license from Apple, such as a reseller agreement.

Thanks. :)

I always thought it was because Apple was too cheap to come-up with the dough to show it.

I might be tempted to show "an banana". :p

Not strictly true - there's also artistic licence. For example, if there was a drama about a computer geek, the producers could show the Apple logo as much as they saw necessary (so long as its not paid for by Apple) if it was important for the story. Apple (along with most other companies) are part of popular culture so their own rules on the use of their logo isn't always fully enforceable.

On quite a few print advertisements in magazines I have seen iMacs used but with the Apple logo removed. You can easily tell it is an iMac though.

Why would Apple take them to court over this it is free advertising.

I don't understand.

That's why they use pear computers on iCarly (Victorious as well).

Lets not forget the iPear computer too.

I saw a thread or article about this a while back. (No time to go back and find it now - gotta get to work.) If I remember correctly, it said that Apple does not pay for product placement, but may furnish equipment if asked.

The covering/altering of the logo may be due to contractual obligations of the studio for product placement to another computer maker or internal policy as opposed to demands of Apple.

They're fairly common. Not around as much as you'd like? Too bad. TV/movies have no incentive to not cover up the logo unless they're getting paid advertising for the placement, so why bother giving Apple free advertising?

This topic comes up about every 2-4 weeks. Same results.

Why bother covering the logo? More effort.

The question is of no importance.

These days, Apple is mainstream at an all time high and I start to dislike Apple, seriously.

Sure, most of their products are still or even more awesome, but the people who work for Apple and supposed to service me.... beurk!!! No sign of goodwill!
