I sure hope that if it pans out that Apple really is building an electric car, it goes better for them the Apple Maps has to date. Apple decided to reinvent the wheel with Apple Maps and here we are -- several years later -- and it is still substantially behind Google Maps in terms of practical functionality.

If the same thing happens with Apple's electric car and they're never able to catch up to Tesla, I hope they finally learn their lesson about reinventing the wheel unnecessarily.

No worries, mate. Forstall is gone. I've been using Apple Maps exclusively for more than a year. It has significantly improved since his departure.

With respect to "reinventing the wheel unnecessarily," I'm certain it's going to be unique. Why do something Tesla has already done? There's plenty of room for a new approach.

I can't wait to see the wireless tankers which will make the deliveries to the charging station owner's underground tanks.

....
And, NY and NJ prices:

0.6999 p. kw/h Cash
0.7999 p. kw/h Credit

Exciting future.

And in NJ you won't be able to charge your own either (lots of gas station attendants to keep employed).

Going back to 1984... Why did Apple need to create a Macintosh? Plenty of IBM PCs out there. Just imagine what Apple will do to a computer...

Going back to 2001... Why did Apple need to make an iPod? Loads of mp3 players already out there...

Going back to 2007... Why did Apple need to make an iPhone? Plenty of wireless phones already in use by many...

Going back to 2010... Why did Apple need to make an iPad? Just a bigger iPhone, right? And MSFT already made a tablet in 2000.

Going back to 2015... Why did Apple need to create a watch? Tons of watches are made every year...
So.. as time moves on the Apple introductions became less significant. ;)

Problem with Apple making a car is that is HAS to be a game-changer (like the Macintosh, iPod and iPhone were).
It cannot be a just Tesla-like with an Apple-bagde.

...As long as that "Open Standard" doesn't require Apple to pay a licensing fee. We're not talking about lightning connectors here.

How I wish that thinking could work the other way too: "as long as that Apple "Closed Standard" doesn't require everyone else to pay Apple a licensing fee." Then, this headphone jack shift rumor could be much more palatable.

It's not a Tesla, but I bought an electric car as a lark and am shocked that it's turned me off internal combustion. As long as your needs fit within the vehicle's range, it's really a superior driving experience and I've come to dread even starting an internal combustion powered car.
Range remains a huge concern, and it will be a deal breaker for many. So is climate. But once you get used to the instant torque and responsiveness of an electric motor, an old-fashioned car is an affliction and never more so than when you consider maintenance and complexity.
Apple could make a real splash in this market. Making iPhone style money in any market depends on a ton of factors and some of those are out of Apple's control. Timing is crucial and this might be exactly the right moment.
The one thing I'd hate to see Apple do in the EV market, but at which I don't think anyone would be surprised, is proprietary infrastructure. It's one thing to have to buy only one kind of phone charging cable. But if you could only charge at an Apple-branded outlet, or only buy Apple-branded tires at Apple-branded garages, you'd really be sticking it to your customers just overtly enough that they'd catch on. And possibly go elsewhere.

So many big problems to solve here, charging stations look to be the least of them. Design, mechanical systems, heavy manufacturing, delivery, regulatory approvals, repair networks. All things Apple has never done.

Touché :)

Oregon was also a "Can't pump your own gas state", but finally has a bill passing to end that.

We will however get another set of laws once the first nitwit sticks a screw driver into the plugs or pours on some water to make the transfer go faster.

Then there will be people with magnets or devices to disrupt the counters.

While I don't deny they are getting better, they still have some pretty major faults from time to time. I was trying to give Apple Maps another go, but when a major highway intersects with another major highway here in Fort Worth and Apple Maps thinks there is a fly-over bridge to get from one highway to another that actually doesn't exist... gotta know it still has a ways to go (at least in some areas). This example had me taking the flyover bridge to go left (east bound) when it doesn't exist in real life and never has. Yes, they built this spot to have further expansion in the future but it isn't actively under consideration or construction now. :(

Such a pretty charging station wouldn't stay pretty for long thanks to vandals.

Well maybe not in Japan where the public has proven they can have nice things.
So true, there were some phone charging stations at the boardwalk where I live. Like a week later they were all ripped off.

The car game is completely different.. Watches, Phones, Mp3 players are consumer electronics.. cars are a way different type of industry.

Agreed. It needs to be a game-changer. And any pronouncements that it isn't one should be considered suspect until after it has time to prove itself, which means after version 2 or 3.

Any pronouncements that it won't be one, when we don't yet know the features or the style (or officially whether it is even happening) should be considered worthless.

I thought it was for "safety" reasons...

Apple has done these things. Apple (well, current and future Apple employees) did them while working for other companies.

These stories are making me rethink my Tesla3 preorder.
Not me. I don't know enough reliable information about Apple's car project to make decisions based on it.

I doubt my Tesla Model 3 will be my last car, so perhaps there will be an Apple car in my future.

Right. It will take BILLIONS, plus a lot of hired talent, to break into the car industry.

They are already spending billions. If it was only a matter of money they'd have it wired. The real issue is experience with the systems, something that can't be readily bought or hired. Would they try to design and build their own electric motors from scratch or buy from an existing motor manufacturer with a long track record? Would they try to design and build their own braking and hydrologic systems? This is stuff they can't afford to get wrong. Doing this entirely in-house from scratch with no experience is a very risky proposition, but we haven't heard a whisper of rumor that they are talking to manufacturers of these parts. So something doesn't add up.

Not with automotive systems they haven't. Thought that was too obvious to include.
