I was wondering if this would happen in the moment when Apple announed
That the WWDC would be online only.

This is not about violating the Apps system in the AppleTV. The AppleTV has a serious problem, but that is not related to Apps, it is related to the fact that it gives no advantage to the buyer. For media consumtionit has a stron vompetitor with he Fire Sticks. For consumption of Apple Content there is the AppleTV App thatnis available on most Smart TVs. My SmartTV even provides HomeKit integration and AirPlay. While connected tonthe TV, I haven’t usen the AppleTV box for months. Hart zo find a reason for buying another AppleTV box.

So, what Apple has achieved is, that owners of SmartTV devices are able to watch the Keynotes. This makes sense. I am wondering if we have just seen the end of the AppleTV. It might be used as a ARM conversion device for devs, but other than that I do jot see more than a hobby without benefits.

...

But all of these apps already integrate into the AppleTV app. Netflix shows are in my Up Next. I can search for the Mandalorian inside of the TV app. I have all the Marvel movies cued up in my Up Next in the TV app. That won’t change.

What will change is that apps will be far less prominent in tvOS. You’ll be able to launch into Netflix directly by bringing up an app list but you’ll more often launch into Netflix from inside of the TV app. When you click a Netflix show, it sends you into the Netflix app.
...
Netflix most definitely does not work with up next (it doesn‘t hook into playback reporting functionality) and the „On Netflix“ options on content pages is incredibly hit or miss (it most of the time doesn‘t have the option for content that most definitely is on Netflix for me).

I don‘t think I‘ve ever launched Netflix from the TV app (and I‘m a heavy user of the TV app).

I don‘t think tvOS future is the TV app, the TV app is just the future of movie/TV content on Apple devices. tvOS just happens to be the goto device for movie consumption (because it was designed for that with a prominent TV remote).

FYI: you can change the TV button behavior to be the home screen button, but having it instantly open the TV app makes way more sense to me anyways.

The TV app as it stands is a bit of a mess. I really think Apple TV+ content should be separate. And the app shouldn’t co-mingle things you have to buy/rent with things you have a subscription to.
Oh absolutely. I never really opened the AppleTV app before getting AppleTV+ for a year with a new iPhone. But I find it not very intuitive to see what is included and what not. A separate path to the previous iTunes Store would be much more helpful.

All of these apps are already integrated with AppleTV. While they aren’t channels, they don’t have to be.

They’re not integrated just hyperlinked.

I’m extremely annoyed because this article does NOT explain how to get to the Apple Events section within AppleTV app. You select Apple Events (new Apple icon) which jumps to the prompt to get to AppleTV section for it.

1. previous events beyond 1yr are now also removed. Gone! This is dumb as I actually like to reference something.

2. going directly into the AppleTV app on my ATV4 there is NO listing for Apple Events.

what a horrible job Apple! Why state that Apple Events is part of AppleTV is one cannot navigate to it within?

Having one place to get all is only beneficial for those tracking your every move. Apple TV and it’s sandbox privacy is why I use Apple TV. the app on a smart TV defeats the reason to use Apple products.

This now confirms to me that tvOS, Apple TV, and Apple TV+ are getting a lot of announcements and overhauls at WWDC. I expect immediate shipment of the new Apple TV, a revamped tvOS, a new and improved Apple TV+ interface to highlight TV+, and at least 4 new show announcements plus trailers and release dates.
Revamped tvOS and a new AppleTV are possibilities. Announcing new shows at WWDC seems highly doubtful, as WWDC is about/for software developers. hardware announced there is nearly always something that developers will want to use (like new MBP’s), or that they’ll need to develop for. New shows really don’t fit.

I hear that. But, there has been a surprising lack of new info out of Apple on their July-September upcoming shows schedule. And, now that services are a core part of Apple's business model, I can see them using WWDC as just an excuse to show off some of their more exciting ones. It's a high profile keynote event with a captive audience, and they can stick it as an interlude after showing off the new Apple TV/tvOS related items.

I personally would love to have the TV app to be a place for all of my movies and series across all services. It's quite annoying that Netflix doesn't support this feature.
For shows (not movies), I still use WatchAid, because it supports nearly every service (including Netflix), and because once I select the shows I’m currently watching, those are the only things that show up on its main page - no advertisements for things to buy, no “you might also like”, just the shows I’m in the middle of watching.

That's a bit of an understatement.

This also has the benefit of making the event stream available on non-Apple devices that have access to the Apple TV app, such as smart TVs.

Anyone had any luck finding the event placeholder in the Apple TV app on a smart TV? I’ve been searching the app through in the past days, even prior this announcement, but all I could find is last year’s WWDC and the September iPhone event videos.

I know I could watch it on YouTube and other alternative methods but I’m interested in this one.

Thanks!

Just tried to watch the apple event via the Apple TV+ app and as I thought it was not a good experience. Worst Idea yet Apple! Completely horrid experience. Guess I'll have to depend on all the other guys for the catch up afterword. About time you start turning the Apple/Titanic in the right direction before you get to the ice flows!

I thought it was spectacular on the Apple TV app actually. Very seamless and high quality video.

Ahead of Monday's WWDC Event, Apple has folded the "Apple Events" app on tvOS into the Apple TV app, which is where the WWDC keynote will be able to be watched.

Searching for the Events app in the tvOS App Store confirms the swap to the TV app, as does attempting to download the Events app for the first time. This appears to be a change that's rolling out at the current time, as opening up the Events app still shows the September 2019 event info.

With Apple sunsetting the Events app, the WWDC keynote and future events will be provided to Apple TV users in the Apple TV app. This also has the benefit of making the event stream available on non-Apple devices that have access to the Apple TV app, such as smart TVs.

Apple's WWDC keynote will kick off on Monday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. The keynote can be viewed in the Apple TV app, on the Apple Events website, in the Developer app, on the Developer website, or on YouTube.

😅 talking about great 4K content and showcasing “the rise of Skywalker” (which only has 1080P resolution on  TV) was just emberasing and confusing.

I´m still hoping to see all 3 last Star Wars movies in 4K though 😕

Ar40 Glad to hear from you and that you had a good experience! Did you try to pause it or catch something you missed?
Never needed to pause. I watched it straight through. I have often found in the past that pausing and rewinding live streams leads to bad video quality and glitching. Through a desktop/web browser as well.

Maybe they were referring to Disney+ integrated into Apple TV? Which is absolutely in 4K.

Yup that was my experience I got there 10 minutes after the start and tried to back up and the app blew up! started it again tried to watch from the current point and got a call and it wouldn't pause so I had to back out and close the app to get the audio to stop. Never had an issue with the events app wish they wouldn't have switched that.

Has anyone figured this out yet? I realize this article is from June, but as of November, 2020, there still appears to be NO way to navigate to Apple Events from the Apple TV app, even though the Apple Events app does in fact tell you that that's what's now required.

(I'm aware that the Apple Events app has a link to the latest event, but where is the direct navigation??)

On the home 'Watch now' tab, there's an Apple events collection under the 'browse by collection' heading. You can also search for apple events

Thanks for the reply. When I view "Browse by Collection," there's no Apple Events collection.

I just scrolled through the collections 3 times, thinking I was overlooking it. It starts with "Trans Lives Onscreen," includes "Military Stories" and "Indigenous Voices" (and others), then ends with "Top Rentals" and "Discover Indie Films." No Apple Events.

FTR, I have an Apple TV 4 set to install all updates automatically. Last night I was on the phone with a friend, and we were both searching our respective Apple TVs for Apple Events as we talked. He couldn't find it either. That's when I came here and posted this.

I believe you're seeing it, but Apple has screwed this up somehow, because we're being shown different things.

yeah, I do agree. It seems as though the content under the ‘browse by collections’ changes, as I’m now seeing different content there from what was there before.

did they show up if you search for it?

It's interesting that you're seeing different content now. This is uncharacteristically sloppy of Apple.

When I search, I can only find older keynote presentations. None of the recent ones. The workaround is to go to the old app, which tells you that the content has been moved, but also gives you a button that takes you to the latest keynote.
