Don't forget the option of giving your old stuff to a relative, friend, or neighbor who might be able to use it but can't afford to buy. That's what I've done with my last three Macbooks.
My daughter's iPhone X gave up the ghost this year, so I was "forced" to upgrade by my wife, so my daughter could have my old iPhone 13 Pro - I would have waited another year. Likewise, her iPad is a 2015 model and the battery is almost dead, so I "had" to upgrade my iPad Air 2021. (At least the photos of our grandkids have improved in quality since she got the iPhone 13 Pro! 😍)

But for the MacBook Pro, I did trade in my Mac mini M1.

I take this as a sign they are trying to increase Mac sales. I for one am about a year later than usual on my upgrade cycle because the original 14" M1 is still speeding along. I can't be the only one.

Apple is usually pretty competitive on trade-in value. It's a ton of hassle to re-sell these days. eBay has gotten *horrible*. I've been re-selling my used gear for 22 years, and I've finally stopped. Too many people are trying to abuse the system and it becomes an expensive headache to fight those battles. Alternatively, you have the risk of meeting someone for an in person pickup, which may net you $100-$200 more than Apple would give for the trade in. Simply not worth the hassle.
I usually was able to resell for 1/2 price meaning I'd be able to get 1500 USD for my M1 Pro MBP 16" 16/1TB.

It is a flawlessly working machine so I am not sure I want to sell it. The quality on this beast is on par with the old 17" MBP - in 4 years of ownership, zero problems. It's remarkable. I attribute it to the thickness of the computer. They're not stretching the hardware, they've giving it that little extra instead.

But yeah M4 Pro will be a huge speed upgrade, more cores, and faster cores.

PS: Special love for the charging cable. No problems. Before the textile cables, they'd always break after a year. This is nice to the touch and indestructible.

I was looking at the Apple Store app and noticed a pop-up that showed some of my devices that are eligible. Apple is high on something.

$40 for an iPhone 8 and $100 for a SE3, and NOTHING for a retina 4K iMac. What a joke. This was an exercise in curiosity and I would never take these offers.

iPad 9: for best quality Best Buy says $130, Apple says $120. And Best Buys are closer to me than Apple stores. Now if only either would also buy back first-gen Pencils...
