Apple on Wednesday increased its estimated trade-in values for select iPad and Apple Watch models in the U.S., according to the company's website.

Apple increased trade-in values for the iPad Pro, iPad Air, entry-level iPad, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch Series 7, which could incentivize customers to upgrade these devices heading into the holiday shopping season. Trade-in values for iPhones, Macs, and other iPad and Apple Watch models did not change at this time.

Apple's trade-in changes are outlined below:

DeviceCurrent Trade-In ValuePrevious Trade-In Value
iPad Pro
Up to $580
Up to $510
iPad Air
Up to $325
Up to $315
iPad
Up to $260
Up to $170
Apple Watch Ultra
Up to $425
Up to $380
Apple Watch Series 7
Up to $160
Up to $155

Apple also adjusted trade-in values for select Android smartphones.

Trade-ins can be completed on Apple's website or at an Apple Store, and the credit can be applied to the purchase of a new Apple product or placed on an Apple gift card for later use. Apple's trade-in page offers a complete list of values for devices.

Truth is Apple doesn’t want your old devices. They go to a 3rd party who needs sufficient margin to operate a business where they refurb and resell them.

While the values are often laughable, for some folks who can’t or won’t sell it themselves it’s at least a way of extracting some value if you want to trade up.

It is interesting that the ultra at least keeps "some" value on trade in, $425 is pretty surprising when the Ultra is just $50 more than a Stainless Steel model, which nets you < $200.

What 3rd party is it? And sometimes just handing it over is so much easier than haggling on price, driving somewhere to meet up with a stranger, etc....

Their value on a trade-in 2021 16” unbinned M1 Pro/16GB RAM/1TB SSD MBP actually beats eBay after fees and keeping accessories right now; $1070. The M1 Pro secondhand market is oversaturated with low demand. I made more money with more certainty trading my 16” for a 14” with Apple (even got to keep the 140w charger and braided cable) than I would’ve made selling on eBay with the box and having to possibly pay shipping costs after fees (I tried).

Keeping the 140w fast charger is like a $100 value, and I got my AppleCare prorated refund, giving me back another $150.

But for my mint unlocked Purple 256gb iPhone 14 Pro, Gazelle was the best choice. Matching eBay values after fees, but with none of the hassle and risk, I just received $701.80 in the mail.

I think Apple was only offering like… $510-$550.

Apple is hitting the wall of capitalism's demand of forever growth. Can't pull blood from a stone.

That's why I think Apple Vision Pro, like all VR/AR tech, is the ruling class's desire to further alienate and transform every single relationship and interaction into a transaction that they own, while everyone else is made into forever renters

Think Snow Crash, Ready Player One, UBIK (AI controlled house doors that you must pay to leave and enter), etc

If this were the goal they'd be giving them away, not selling them at a price few can afford.

and they just received my Ultra today...too bad they won't give me the new value..

Trade-in can also mean just getting a gift card to use [toward] a different device. Say you’re not a fan your AWU after all, but would like to get an iPad and you don’t want to sell items to strangers.

Would you say it makes sense to trade in a Series 6 for a Series 9 at this point when you just got an AppleCare+ replacement with a fresh battery recently?

No. Not at all! Either use it or sell it, but do not trade in what is essentially now a new Series 6.

If you covet a 9, keep in mind that many people own more than one Watch. There may also be a family member who would like your revitalized 6!

Thanks for reminding me that I kept the charger and cable when I traded in my iPad mini 6. I paid $399 plus 10% local sales tax, but later traded it for a $250 gift card. If I consider the value of the charger and cable, it’s less of a hit. [For the cost of owning an iPad mini for a few months and learning that I didn’t like it, but also understanding why others do.]

Yeah, this bothers me a lot about the system, and about the company, especially with all their eco-conscious posturing. How they don’t/won‘t replace watch batteries, and how much 3rd party crud is involved… where are the Liam and Daisy robots in all this? 🤨

I enjoyed the unexpected glimmer of unusual hope 1-2 years ago in the opposite direction, I forget the details but some news about repair phones or other devices yourself kits, but they also seemed way too difficult.

Might want to trade in my AW7 while it's still worth something.
I am tempted by this but also it bugs me to think I got it only 2 years ago. So am I supposed to do this every 2 years? In addition to being a hassle, it seems like it also creates more e-waste.

To add to this: eBay scams. Winning bidders who don't pay, or someone potentially giving you trouble if they have self-induced hardware or software issues down the line

That's tempting to trade-in my 12.9-inch A12Z iPad Pro, the Apple Store app shows up to $400 (from $385 in July/23). I bet Apple is gonna redesign the Magic Keyboard for the next model too.
