Well... it may be a low rate for a general population that includes the homeless, the unemployed, the terminally ill and/or mentally disturbed, the depressed, etc... but it's NOT acceptable when all 400,000 are under the same management inside a corporate ghetto, all hired by and working for a company with huge quality and cost-saving pressure.

But that's me... I still don't think it's acceptable to have such arrangement so we can buy electronic crap and Foxconn/Apple keep their insane profit margins.

34 hours, what the heck, is this some sort of indentured servitude? I cannot imagine working 34 hours.
 
400,000 is about the size of a medium sized city. 11 suicides, although tragic, is not that much really. It's more the fact that they (possibly) all came about because of the same 'problems' thats the worrying thing.

Until a few years ago, medical residents in the USA (i.e. doctors who had graduated but just starting their career), often worked 36 hour shifts although they could take breaks during the quiet times. It's not as physically tiring as working on a factory floor, but I imagine it is mentally exhausting. I think it was changed in part because people thought it might lead to errors, but I'm not sure if that was actually proved.

I immediately thought about doctors and residents too. But the conditions are probably quite different. And the pay is probably different too.

You know what they say; If you're not part of the solution then you're part of the problem.
 
Foxconn should perhaps consider enforcing some decent labor rules that would prevent anyone from working more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period. Or something to that effect.
 
You do realize that 11 (though I think it was 13) suicides out of 400,000 is a pretty low rate? That's much lower rate than the U.S. and lower than quite a few other countries.


Every time the suicidal rate comes up, somebody claims that it's not higher than the US rate (Steve Jobs included a few days ago).

But nobody compares US factory workers with Chinese factory workers. Nobody lists Chinese national figures covering the whole population. In fact, nobody says that among rural females in China, suicides are three times more common than among urban females.

People commit suicide for a reason. Young workers do it mostly because of being underpaid and overworked. That is the real cost of your iPhone.

I wonder if the people jumping from the rooftops are this happy (smiling). The communist hats are a nice touch though. Makes me wish my Apple product cost a couple hundred more so it could be made in the USA...
