Actually, innovative design overall. Their industrial design products would be, for one, the PowerMac which is a great example of industrial design.

The designs that have caught the consumers eye [iMac, mac mini, iPod, etc.] are hardly industrial. Innovative? Yes.

Its all industrial design. Indstrial Design = Product Design (in this case anyway 😛 )

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Apple's share is growing again and Intel know it. Do you honestly think Dull would be anywhere near the major player it is if it sold the same quality machines Apple do? I doubt it. They rely on a small number of high end systems and the majority of low end systems, (with mid range making up the numbers). If Apple decided to broaden their range and target low end users, sure Mac Os would stick at about 10-15% share, but Apple would be alongside Dell as the largest hardware manufacturers.
I am a PC user but am looking to get an apple laptop next year. I have never read as much rubbish as there is on this thread. Face it Apple is a good pr win for intel but money wise it is a drop in the ocean as they are such a small player. Maybe they will rise above the current 4-7% market share, and then they will be able to renegotiate their contract to be more favourable.

As for the above comment "Dull" is the biggest player. If they sold the same quality machines that apple did they would have to charge a lot more and therefore sell a lot less. It's not rocket science, the average user wants a cheap computer which apple don't make. I know people will say the mac mini but compare that to the average similar priced dell. The pc will be faster, more compatible with lots of software and come with a printer, speakers, keyboard, mouse and lcd. Granted it will be big and ugly but most people don't care.

Apple have got a good product and a great opportunity but don't think they are a major player because the figures don't lie.

It's been pointed out a half dozen times already, but once again, Intel doesn't give a flying you-know-what about their customer's market shares. Why would they? Their plan is to sell as many of their processors as possible, and it doesn't really matter to whom they sell them. As for the "small player" charge, this is obviously ludicrous. Apple will automatically become one of Intel's largest customers. Not that I think this matters much, as nobody has provided any evidence that Intel offers any preferential treatment to their larger customers.

Despite manufacturer's fears, at least one rumor claimed that despite Apple's efforts to obtain earlier chips, Intel was not agreeable.

Despite rumormongerers that won't let this one go, even Intel is not this stupid. They simply cannot afford to "play favorites" and torque off an industry that is just chomping at the bit for a reason to switch to AMD.

All this talk of market-share is pure hooooey. Steve plays golf with Andy Grove or one of the Bigwigs at Intel. As for number of processors Apple will buy, that benefit to Intel will be heavily eclipsed by all the publicity,

Nobody gets Free Publicity like Apple.

This is a HUGE win for Intel, especially in light of Sony, Nintendo, and even micrapsoft agreeing to all dump x86 processors on their gaming consoles to move to PowerPC.

Sony and Nintendo never dumped the x86 -- they just never used it in their game consoles ever. Sony uses MIPS processors in the PS1, PS2, and PSP. Nintendo used a MIPS processor in the N64, an ARM in the GBA and DS, and a PowerPC in the GameCube.

Sure, Microsoft dumped the x86 for the Xbox, but that's the only one.
