At WWDC 2024, Apple introduced an onslaught of Apple Intelligence features that integrate AI into everything from Siri to built-in apps like Mail, Messages, and Photos. Apple Intelligence is still under development, and it won't immediately be available to developers.

Apple plans to debut Apple Intelligence in the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia betas this summer. When Apple Intelligence officially launches to the public this fall, it will be available in a beta capacity. Some of the Apple Intelligence additions might take even longer to launch, with Apple suggesting that "some features, additional languages, and platforms" will be coming over the course of the next year.

With Apple Intelligence, Siri is much smarter, and there are tools for generating custom emoji and images, refining your writing, summarizing content, cutting down on unimportant notifications, and way more. Apple is also partnering with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT 4o to its platforms, with ChatGPT set to be integrated into Siri and Writing Tools. Siri will be able to tap into ChatGPT for some tasks, asking user permission to share information.

Apple Intelligence is free to use, but it is limited to devices with the A17 Pro chip or any M-series chip. That means to use these features, you need an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max, but the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup will support Apple Intelligence too.

On the Mac side, you need a Mac with an M1 or later, and for iPads, you need an iPad Pro or iPad Air with an M1 chip or later.

Poop on you, Apple. You're not getting me to upgrade from my iPhone 14 Pro Max until it dies. Even if that means I would finally be able to create a vinyl record emoji! 😜 Something that should have been an emoji for years now!

The big question I have is, CAN WE TURN IT OFF?

That's all I want to know. I just don't trust this stuff at all.
then it's worth noting that updates are optional.

what has apple done for you to not trust them?
the only party I don't trust is OpenAI.

Apple made a big emphasis that the codebase would be independently reviewable, and prove that it is private.

i'm really disliking this whole thing going on right now in the tech industry, where they will announce something, then say "it's actually not done yet lol coming later enjoy the tease hehe"
or releasing half baked promises they won't deliver on until later.
hype you up to buy a product based on what they're promising and not what they're shipping.
it's time to stop!

I can see this being hindered by GDPR or something in the EU
Doubt it. Microsoft Copilot doesn't have any GDPR issues.

I've been involved with the various Copilots from Microsoft for a while now and can see the benefits of GenAI as an assistant. My only resistance to it being that my data is used to train the AI models (Copilot for Microsoft 365 doesn't train using org data).

I've kinda moved away from the Apple Ecosystem and only have a MacBook Air now but Apple Intelligence may bring me back if what they showed works like they showed it.

Quite impressed with the security aspect and clear notifications.

I do wonder if your prompt to Siri said something like 'Ask ChatGPT for ...' would stop the prompts which does halt your workflow if you're speaking and have to tap to allow ChatGPT to be used.

All impressive, useful in daily life and crucially mostly on-device. But not having the option to process requests on a neighbouring M-Series device for older hardware is a missed opportunity. Lots of us have older iPhones but an M-x Mac or iPad.

Honestly, as much as I'm concerned about this AI stuff, it makes me feel a tiny bit better that Apple is taking its time to get it right.

Didn’t see anything interesting. The AI stuff was old hat and the OS features were mostly bloat.

Did think AW getting Garmin and Whoop like additions were a good start. Can imagine 5 years from now Apple might have done enough to make Whoop obsolete, if Whoop doesn’t do that themselves or get bought.

Also liked the SMS via satellite. Very handy. Been stranded cycling a fair few times with no signal so could have used that.

Otherwise bland. The AI stuff will be half baked and mostly useless. Long way to go.

So translation, we are trying to keep you from jumping ship, so we will offer these features, but not now.

Or maybe it's a beta release for a reason? It's not done yet, this period allows time to test and prepare. Would you prefer developers be blindsided and take even longer to implement new features?

On the note of half-baked promises, a good rule is don't buy something under a promise of what it will have/do. Whether it's a videogame preorder or a new computer, wait until it's released, else it's vaporware or a cashgrab. Early adoption includes the minefield of quirks or bugs, you should know what you're getting into.

There's a keyboard I'm interested in buying but it's still in a preorder phase, with no hands-on from review sources I trust. I'm not gonna blow $$$ on it until I have more data and real-world use.
