Yes. Yes. Yes.

But:
-It's the Daily Mail. They lie.
-They couldn't get 'exclusive' rights, EU stopped that (and this mentions streaming).

I agree with the other posters who suggest that Apple would likely strike a deal to get non-exclusive rights and partner with a TV broadcaster. That said, right now Fox has the US rights to the EPL and broadcasts it on a premium channel. Perhaps Apple would want to include it on a package to keep it off Google TV and on Apple TV.

Ps. How could Murdoch 'stop' them? Apple are rich enough to cancel football all together...

True, plus Murdoch is still dealing with the fallout from the phone hacking scandal over there, so he wouldn't want to do anything to give the regulators another excuse to clamp down on him.

No he isn't... the whole investigation is kind of a farce and Murdoch is as good as free... not that anything could happen to him anyway, the Tories love him

Well because apple aren't going to do it unless it would allow them to make more profit in the long run.

Having these rights is a MUCH bigger deal for sky than it would be for apple. I'd bet anything that sky won't lose all of them.

I mean I agree with your first point though. It's the daily mail, which automatically means it is probably BS.

Although I doubt it would happen if it were to be accessed to the US it would be a major step for the game as a whole. The MLS is improving every year and even if users aren't watching MLS games its showing how big the sport could be for the future.

Any US Newcastle United fans? or are we all ManUnited, ManCity, Chelsea and Arsenal fans?

Mike Ashley is a legend.

The NFL just resigned TV broadcast rights, I never saw mention of Internet streaming rights. If you have information about this, please share because I haven't been able to find details.

Also, the NFL just announced that some of the playoffs and the Superbowl will be available online or free, live.

You're correct, my mistake. The broadcasters have not mentioned anything about internet streaming. Perhaps there is still hope. ESPN however secured rights for MNF on WatchESPN in their latest deal.

Although it seems like he is a greedy pathetic man, he seems to be doing huge things behind the scenes financially. Could prove to be a top 6 team in a few years time.

Still doesnt give me the right to like him though, time will tell.

re original article

dont know much about soccer (football)

but bunches of people in my neck of the woods swear their loyalty to team chivas

I get those games free here thanks to the internet. Watch 'em on my mac, wish I could on my ipad but no flash but on the go my droid lets me see Arsenal games.

I have an issue with the way U.S. fans arbitrarily choose an EPL team to support. It creeps me out. You can't wear the shirt unless you've actually lived there.

We have Dish Networks 250 package just to get Fox Soccer Channel for the EPL. Hugely expensive to get High Def football if you ask me. I'm all for $15-$20 a month to get what I want without the other 249 channels we hardly ever watch. If it happens (which I doubt) I'm in.

Also, I wonder how many critics of soccer have actually played it competitively, or have some something else to back up their claims?

This article is about football, not american football

Also, the Saints are one of the 3-4 best teams this year.

The Saints, as in Southampton, the English football club topping the nPower Championship, you idiot. Get some knowledge before you throw your mouth.

There are plenty of NFL games on free, over-the-air broadcast TV, so I don't see what all the fuss is about.

As a shareholder, I am not sure if this is the right move for Apple. They do have the billions that is necessary to spend, but usually others make it up with ads. Apple is trying to make it up with margins on device sales? Something does not add up.

I strongly suspect the NFL streaming its own playoff games is a portend for the near future.

So the question is...in 2013...how is the ATV3 going to allow you to watch the stream? Because currently, the ATV2 can't.

I've been saying for awhile now that if Apple can get all the major live sporting events, they will win. That's virtually the ONLY reason that anyone I know who has cable (or satellite) keeps it. And if Apple gets all the big sports venues, they suddenly have greater leverage over cable companies (who will then be bleeding customers BIG time) when negotiating with the content providers.

And for all you people who make fun of soccer, the FIFA World Cup is the MOST watched sporting event in the world. EPL is also way up there in audience. And I know at least a dozen people (granted my friends and I are soccer fans) who wouldn't think twice to plunk down large sums of cash to watch any and all EPL games being streamed. Esp if it was made easily available like through ATV2.

What Apple needs is a huge customer base because then it has something other than cash with which to negotiate with the content providers. EPL would be a REALLY nice boost. If they can get NFL, college football, and college basketball on top of soccer, it's a foregone conclusion - Apple WILL dominate TV.

It's about distribution rights and reception of programming. A shift from cable and OTA distribution would upend the current broadcast hierarchy. Many consumers have dreamed of this for years. The days of paying for 1000 channels and only watching 5 could be over. Roof antennas could disappear. Cable and satellite companies could crumble overnight. This is way bigger than streaming a football match, it could be the dawn of a new era in TV.
