Funny thing is I really liked this laptop when it came out. Used it for a month before taking it back. I could deal with the keyboard and the speed limitations, but ultimately it was that GD single usb port that ruined the experience. There was plenty of space for a second one, but Apple was Apple and refused to add it despite being one of the biggest complaints about the model. I’m a photographer by trade, so if I’m having to bring a GD dongle to plug in the power cord and an external drive or SD reader at the same time, I’m out.
I often thought it would have done better with a second USB instead of the headphone jack, but really due to the keyboard stretching to the sides that was the only place they could have put a second one.

It's really disgraceful for Apple to hold the title of 'only major manufacturer without a sub-1kg notebook'. The Air name is almost a joke by now, they only seem light compared to every other manufacturers cheaper notebooks, because everyone else make 14.1" ones, not 13.6".
You are mistaken in thinking that Air refers to other manufacturers when it refers to Apple’s other computers.

Unlikely, Apple rarely give their consumers what they want. They’d rather sell you three devices instead of one.
How well did these sell? Did they justify making them if they didn’t sell very well? If they didn’t sell well, why would they bring it back? I’m not defending Apple, but did these even sell well (or other small devices they made like the iPhone mini)?

I remember when I got it I fell in love with its size and the gorgeous display. I can't believe it's been a full decade. How time flies is kind of disturbing. I genuinely believe a super compact form of MacBook could work today with apple silicon.

Did you even read Macrumors back then? The horror of only one port including for charging, high price, no fan, low performance CPU, and a keyboard many people didn't like.

Read the thread of the original article:

Those threads are always funny. The iPad and Watch threads were crazy too.

It's pretty consistent.

  • Apple releases a new product.
  • Many MR members crap on the product and announce that it has failed before launch.
  • Product is successful anyway.

I wonder if they have only an Air and Pro for this reason. You tell someone you have a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro, but if you just say MacBook, which one?
Good call. I wish they would stop the inaccurate numbering with the iPhones too. It’s not really iphone number 16, is it? I wish they would go for year number 2025 iphone pro like 2025 MacBook Air.

Back in the day almost every manager had one at my company. Ironically, if they price them right, meaning being expensive, then it could be the status symbol for management who don't need a Pro, but find having an Air "insulting". Anyone who needs better portability than the Air, would also pay the extra, if it has the right features, including me. It could sell better than the vision pro, for a fraction of the development cost.

I loved mine. Put more than 100K miles on it; the “worst” thing about it was that it was so light I had to check my backpack to make sure I hadn’t forgotten it.

Bring back Jony Ive.

Absolutely not. He is a loose cannon without Jobs and does nothing except make products worse.

I don't think he'll be back anyway. Ive wanted to move back to the UK for years but Apple wouldn't allow it; he's not coming back to the US.

My wife has one and I'm always incredibly jealous of the weight of it when we travel. I would love to see apple release a new version of this with a better keyboard and an M4 CPU. It would be an amazing travel computer.

Here at Apple we are always innovating to bring you the best products

This summer we are so excited to announce MacBook SE

The lightest, thinnest MacBook ever.

Starting at $2999

We are so excited to see what you do with MacBook SE

SE = Special Edition the most premium line. Not to be confused with the previous SE branding or E branding. Better than Pro.

I'm kind of not surprised it didn't last long. That Intel M chip and the 8 GB RAM limitation, they definitely were meant for casual computing in the thinnest and smallest form factor possible. Of course, Apple wanted to have a premium ultraportable laptop again, after the MacBook Air changed from being that into Apple's entry-level Mac laptop, taking the place of the polycarbonate iBooks and MacBooks. But yeah, at that time a single USB-C port was definitely not enough. When the fourth generation of MacBook Pros were launched later in 2016, at least they gave you two to four of those ports, and they were the Thunderbolt variety, so it was a lot less controversial then. Plus by that time, numerous third-party companies were already making nice USB-C hubs and docks for use with such MacBooks. (When I ordered my M1 MacBook Air, I also bought that Falwedi USB-C hub shortly before the Air arrived so I could start using it with some of my existing devices right away.)

We did get one with a broken screen at my former computer tech job, a first-generation model from 2015. Unfortunately since the screen was broken and we had no way of getting a video image out through our USB-C hubs to one of our external monitors, we couldn't do much with it. And yes, those butterfly keyboards sucked, from my experiences working with some 2016-19 MacBook Pros and Airs there; they felt pretty flimsy.
