Guess I'm becoming a luddite, but I've basically stopped using the App Store at all. I'd be fine with just the default apps at this point. Chances are, you're paying for some vibe coded slop that actually provides negative value instead of enriching your life.

You can call me one too. I haven't actually purchased anything on the App Store, subscription or otherwise, in almost two years. Only apps I've downloaded have been free. It's about as organized and curated as a neighborhood yard sale, so finding anything novel or interesting just sucks.

🤣 I like your optimism. I don't share it though!

"Don't look at that big number over there... look at this smaller one here!"

We'll see.
if developers can get away with raising the annual price in plain sight, then they would just as easily get away with raising the price without introducing this subscription option. so there's no difference. y'all love to lose your minds over everything apple does and find some way to make it bad.

Call me old or old fashioned, but I miss the days of buying software and it working for as long as I wanted to use it in the state I bought it at. Now I seems even the smallest features and tasks each has its own app with a subscription. It’s not just the money anymore, most apps aren’t worth the time managing them.

Outrage is what many live for. It feels good and is empowering.

Honestly preferred the "pay for a full year" option. Even though it's not actually much different in theory, there's something about the idea of being forced into monthly subscription contract that is very unappealing.

Apple isn't forcing anyone into a monthly subscription contract.

they’re introducing the options to pay for annual plans with monthly installments. it’s so ridiculously straightforward i can’t even figure out how you’re confused about that.
I’m surprised this didn’t already exist. Are they ever going to offer upgrade pricing?

Imagine if MacRumors had subscriptions :

I had to pay a monthly subscription to be able to post this comment. If I upgrade my membership to "premium" then I can have access to level 1 emojis. If I want to unlock more emojis I need to upgrade to "premium +". And if I upgrade to "Premium + Gold" I can also unlock the ability to comment on political articles.

You want to read more comments from me ? Easy : subscribe to "lepetitnicolas" for more, every day, every week I'll deliver new comment typed by hand directly to your screen. Just subscribe and also don't forget the bell and tell me which country you are reading me from in the comments and don't forget to click on the link of the sponsor of this comment : macrumors.com !

If you choose that option, it sounds like you are indeed entering a contract where you are forced to pay something monthly. It's nice to have options, but I personally don't want to get into contracts like that with apps.

Huh that didn't exist before? Like a annual YouTube Premium subscription is already cheaper than paying monthly. Same with Disney+. Don't get it.
Before, it would have been $10 a month or $100 annually today. Now it is $10 a month or $100 billed as $8.33 a month with a 12 month commitment. You pay either $10 or $8.33 today.

It's adding more subscription *payments* that need to be settled each month, with the added annoyance of having to pay for a year, even if you choose to cancel early.
No. It's adding that as an OPTION. Previously subscriptions were monthly with some offering a single payment for a year. This option ADDED to those lets you do the same yearly subscription (which gives a small savings per year over monthly) but lets you pay it off in monthly installments.

Not necessarily because most likely you can cancel the 12 month commitment and then the app stops working at the end of that month. Also it's up to the developer if they want to offer a 12 month commitment or not.
